An alternate timeline being the Knightmare Concept would work... but, with how timetravel is accepted, you cannot go back to your old timeline unless you undo what changed. Meaning... the population of RuneScape who start this quest will be trapped in the Knightmare Concept until they've corrected everything/go back in time and prevent them from being captures. A mirror allows players to pass freely into the alternate reality - it's an unreflection.
