Legendary items?
The concept of Legendary items...
Currently, in RuneScape, legendary items are generically the best. Their states, their effects, etc. But does anyone else dislike this? I've always preferred that a legendary item merely represented wealth, achievement or is worn for it's appearance or effect and not because it's generically better than modern equipment. For example, chromatic equipment (bronze through to new equipment) should forever excel what you can obtain from the past in terms of defensiveness. However, legendary items represent more than that. Dragon stands for wealth with the Barrows' equipment worn for their effects... the choice of smithed armour that may be better vs an effect like Guthan's? I don't know, what do you guys think?
Fable, Pokemon, etc, they all use Legendary items for being unique and not necessarily better. Fable has a weapon called the Hammerthyst and it's epic when you receive it because it excels anything your level could possibly own and it's got a nifty Augment. However, as you progress further into the game it's surpassed by chromatic equipment. I think that the Master Cutlass is the best weapon in the game, but some legendary items have effects that would make them desirable over the Master Cutlass. Umm... such as that one which deals double damage to the undead.

I think it could go either way. Legendary could be better... but maybe it just looks cool or has an effect.
I'm not sure where to stand on this one.

I'm only saying this because I had a comment on my smithing thread that says this would undermine legendary equipment by surpassing it in terms of stats. But, in my opinion, stats isn't what the legendary items should be for. You don't buy Dragon for it's stats - you buy it as a symbol of wealth.

So are we saying liek the comparison between a Whip and a GS...like I'd always choose the GS special but the whip is much better for general combat

I wouldn't mind stuff if it was better... just if they came out with new legendary items, would you want them higher?
If your smithing idea came out, I wouldn't care. But would Jagex come out with BETTER legendary stuff, or would they make lower with different effects?

Re: The concept of Legendary items...
No, I'm comparing a Godsword to the possibility of a chromatic weapon with greater stats but nothing special about it. Like... why do people chose Dragon over cheaper and more affordable armour? There aren't many other examples currently in RuneScape due to the culture that a legendary piece of equipment should be the best unless surpassed by other legendary equipment.
Legendary equipment will always be released, I don't doubt this, but why must it always surpass existing equipment? The Spirit Shield doesn't have the highest stats, I believe, it's only it's effects and appearance that makes it favourable.

Re: The concept of Legendary items...
yes, but if you add a sigil to it, it becomes the best shield in the game, ande at other times you'll look amazing that you killed the Coporal Beast or paid of 600m to get it!
That is why it almost passed the Christmas Cracker!
I do have a long-term goal, that one day, one freaking lucky day, I'll get a clue that leads me to getting a 3rd Age Kite-shield- not because of the money- but because I absolutely love the design!
However, it isn't my top priority, or else I would have been doing level 3 clues when I started being a member 3 years ago.
So its basically a mixture of both appeal, and functionality. I mean who wouldn't antto look cool, but still have it funtional. I've started using my anchor- since I lost my whip with an unfortunate accident during Dream Mentor Quest and it hits higher than ever, and hell its much more appealing. However the whip is like three times faster.

Re: The concept of Legendary items...
I'm confused 3mpty, because your distinction seem to me to be between Made Items and Pre-made items (Whip, GS, SS, Barrows etc.)
But I wouldn't classify all weapons that aren't made by players as "legendary." The whip for example: it may be one of the best weapons around but I wouldn't class it as legendary like Barrows or GS.

Re: The concept of Legendary items...
I don't class the whip as legendary.
My only dislike on a legendary item is that they render usual items useless. Just because it's got a nifty effect doesn't mean it has to surpass chromatic equipment in all respects. The Elysian and Divine shields are sufficient enough to not really need stats which surpass chromatic equipment. However, with Rune being the highest in the chromatic chain (excluding Dragon), it's not really comparable. We'd need a few more sets, first.
