Refer a Friend
So...your thoughts? I know there's a lot of heated opinions out there, so let's hear it.

Re: Refer a Friend
It sounds like a good idea to me. Maybe the 10% bonus experience might be a little too rewarding, but perhaps there could be an exclusive item for players who refer a friend.

Re: Refer a Friend
The problem as I'm seeing it is that people can refer themselves, make new accounts, get membership on these, and get a 10% bonus on their main account. If you use that 10% on something like prayer or herblore, or another skill you have to buy, that adds up to a lot of money and a lot of experience. It's basically paying for xp/coins, which feels a lot like real world trading.
Also, a foreseeable problem with bots is that they can level up quicker than ever and get resources that much faster.
And basically, it feels like a slap in the face. I got Runescape membership because I liked the updates, not because I was bribed there.

Re: Refer a Friend
Perhaps there could be another kind of bonus, like an emote or a piece of clothing. A standard that says "Friend of a RuneScape member", which both the player and the friend recieve.

Re: Refer a Friend
See, that's what would be alright. But apparently they've already thought of that.
"You say that you don't give membership as there is problems with fraud. However, why don't you do a banner? This would present no fraud and people could show off how much they support this game.
Mod Nexus: If you mean in-game banner? we looked into giving in-game items out, and I've mentioned this elsewhere but there's very little to be gained by someone creating a throwaway account just to get an item. That's not the point of a Refer A Friend scheme."
Was I suppose to understand that to mean that the point is for people to make throwaway accounts?

I was about to say that I coulda have sworn I replied to this thread... but apparently I hit "edit" on Jeeves' post instead of "quote".

Re: Refer a Friend
And pay even more money for a slight Xp, oh.
I think Loyalty Points would work much better.

Re: Refer a Friend
I have to agree; it makes Jagex seem desperate to attract members... I don't think this update was thought out the most clearly. Getting someone to join s like showing loyalty to Jagex and I would be much more satisfied if they award the player with loyalty points.

Re: Refer a Friend
The funny thing is that people say that Runescape is dying...but the whole genre is dying. Even WoW has decreasing traffic. People are moving to shooters, or indie games.

Re: Refer a Friend
RuneScape isn't really dying. This refer a friend method is usually an attempt to increase publicity. The best advertisements are word of mouth. So if a friend recommends the game, you'll usually go along with it. This is a means of thanking players for recommending RuneScape over other games.
In other words, it's a free advert!

Word of mouth is how RS became popular in the first place.

Re: Refer a Friend
Exactly! It's one of the best means of advertising, because you're getting a referral from someone you know, who has enjoyed it themselves and believes its worth your time as well.

Re: Refer a Friend
This is bullshit. Nobody subscribes to RuneScape within two weeks of joining. The only people who will make use of this system are those willing to buy a 10% XP bonus and bots, and that leaves JaGex supporting two things they claim to hate the most (RWTers and botters) with this update.
This is poorly thought through and really just another insult from JaGex.

Or 5 Xp Bonuses per year. I think that 10% bonus should be repleaced with loyalty points.

Re: Refer a Friend
I agree, loyalty points would be better. And, as I said earlier, the conditions for earning the reward are very unrealistic
I think this will be a real test of how well JaGex listens to player feedback, I'd be very interested to hear what the JMod's response is...
