Re: Eastern Promises
We should try to invent our own culture rather than directly clone one. Make up cultural differences such as it being normal for women to shave their heads, maybe everyone shaves their head? Perhaps they live in circular houses, or their stairs are always on the outside of buildings? Umm, they're primary cutlery is a knife-fork combo which they use two of... They never invented a spoon because it's accepted to drink fluids direct from the dish. Heavy use of body makeup? They have a very Wiccan/Pagan belief system where they believe all things have spirits. I don't know. Maybe they so believe in fate, concepts such as coincidence and luck being alien, that they are very literal people (take things seriously), wholly believing bad things happen because they do bad things.
The only things you really need to convince most people it's Eastern is samauri/ninja bad guys, buildings with decorative roofs, snake-dragons, lanterns and a highly symbolic/spiritual fashion/art/life style, etc.

Re: Eastern Promises
Spur idea... What about no combat? Their philosophy of life, or whatever, forbids them to kill anything, not even in self defense. Although their lands are inhabited by several dangerous beasts, they do not kill them.
During our first visit, some quests, we kill a beast to defend one of them, however that is breaking one of their most important un-spoken laws, and the player is outlawed from the beginning.

Re: Eastern Promises
its amazing with the "own-Culture" idea, It has to be that! no more cloning. What is this culture called?
they could have no combat but still have a hightech defence system (from the ancients, and they dont know how it works or what it is or where it comes from, but they are safe from all harm when they are inside the "shield") which are defending them, if not, they could be no more when the beast have killed everyone of them
okey, they worship everything that seems supernatural or something. what are they civilization status? you know, do they know that the wind is the wind or is it the "god's/spirits breath"

Re: Eastern Promises
They could have a Greek pantheon style god-system, where each unexplained thing has a god representing it. But, perhaps, since I like the sound of "God's breath", all the different things aren't actually different gods, just the same god. Although I think it would be hard to associate things with parts of a god after a while...
Do not kill. So they are vegetarian? Or do they eat carrion (dead meat)? It sounds intriguing. But a culture that has never developed combat couldn't be that advanced, surely? Stones were sharpened to kill before they were sharpened to cut.

Re: Eastern Promises
Or...not...Especially since cannibalism as a lifestyle is hella stupid...for an entire continent...because of innefficiencies in eating...

Re: Eastern Promises
if they are cannibals they kill for food, and you may not be welcomed there for the moment...
you got a point with the stone be sharp before they were sharp there 3mpty.. but how do we make a peaceful culture, of course we need tools to build with or are they magicians so that they do it with their mind?
we need to do something out of it, somehow they need to, develop further with, they are eating what they are growing up. They eat to survive and do not kill for fun. They hunt so the animals dont grow in to high numbers to harm the villagers, they fish the fishes so that the fishes dont die out for "too crowded" rivers, they cut down trees so new younger ones can grow old again. They have cattle if so be, to get milk, wool and eggs but they dont kill the cattle. Only when they are really sick and need to die to not harm the other animals or cattles.. Hows about that??
