The Stone of Jas is a Lie. Empty The Stone of Jas is a Lie.

Post by MorbiusMonster Thu Feb 17, 2011 12:57 am

For many of us who completed “While Guthix Sleeps” we know that after our player accidentally defeated the Balance Elemental, Lucien acquired and stole the legendary “Stone of Jas”, the supposedly most powerful artefact of the RuneScape world. This single object has legends surrounding it; creation myths believing it to be the bringer of life to this world and is the very centre of magic for mortal races. Now with it in the hands of the Mahjarrat Lucien, who knows what fate lies in store for us?
But something feels entirely unwholesome about this stone of myth being where mortals would be able to find it. Why would Guthix, who saw the destruction that was wrought on the world over objects that were less powerful than the sacred stone, simply place the stone underground where mortals could find it? Why put an elemental as its guardian, if said guardian could be defeated or overcome by mortals? Why would you simply leave something so powerful on this earth when evil is present on both sides?

After much thought, I tried to understand why the stone was placed where it was, and why its protection was mediocre to say the least. And then it hit me. Perhaps Guthix wanted the stone to be found; perhaps we wanted someone to find an all powerful artefact rumoured to be from the dawn of time? Why would he do that? Because, the Stone of Jas... Is a FAKE!

Pretty much, you’d want to divert people away from such a powerful object; so you’d make some kind of decoy to take their minds away from the real thing. If they had the decoy that had some kind of a power, they wouldn’t think of it as a decoy straight away and stay away from the real thing. So, if this was the case, where is the real Stone of Jas?

The answer is far more interesting than you might realise, and once I explain, it’ll make perfect sense. The real Stone of Jas is... the Moon.

By now you’re probably thinking “This player is mad; the moon?” and quite rightly you would be, but allow me to explain. RuneScape is almost a perfect replica of our Earth; same gravity, same atmosphere, same biodiversity, same arrangement in space. The differences are simply down to culture; pretty much everything else is identical. So, imagine the planets’ origins were the same.

Without our moon, our world would be a lifeless place. Without the initial collision, the core wouldn’t be iron rich and able to generate a magnetic field, so we’d be at the mercy of the cosmic radiation that would prevent complex life occurring. Without our moon, we wouldn’t have the axis of our planet that makes life so diverse and keeps it flowing. The moon’s gravity accounts for so much on our planet; it controls the weather, the tides and there is evidence that it may influence geological activity such as earthquakes and volcanoes, all processes that show a living planet. Our planet would be uninhabitable without it.

The Stone of Jas has so many myths behind it in RuneScape culture, some which scream out that it is very much like Earth’s moon. Wizard Elriss calls the stone “the Eye of Saradomin”, which is very interesting. In Japanese mythology, the moon was part of a triad of gods who were the children of Izanagi and Izanami. The sun was one eye and the moon was the other. It is also a bed time story in Western cultures for people to see a face in the moon, perhaps the humans of RuneScape see one also and it resembles Saradomin.
Another myth calls the Stone the Fist of Guthix. Guthix is known in that culture as the creator of RuneScape, giving it life. By rights, the stone fits that description too. In our history, scientists theorise that our moon hit the Earth, knocking it onto its axis and causing Earth to melt in the impact and absorb the iron within the moon. This hefty “punch” that the moon gave the Earth allowed it to become readily able to sustain life, once the surface had cooled once more. If RuneScape had a similar origin as Earth, then this large object that impacted RuneScape to allow it have life, would be like Guthix punching it, hence the fist.

The magic in RuneScape can also be explained by the stone as well. People of RuneScape believed the Rune Essence is an extension of the Stone of Jas, notably those of the rune crafting community. This would therefore mean that Rune Essence would be, funnily enough, moon stone. The colour resemblance is almost uncanny, they are effectively the same. But one reference that screams right in your face is this, the person who discovered rune essence and effectively returning magic to humans on RuneScape was a member of (pause for dramatic effect)... the MOON CLAN, one of the most magically powerful clans in RuneScape.

So there you have it. If my evidence is correct, the Lucien hasn’t stolen the Stone of Jas, but instead has a really pure sample being used as a decoy. He’ll effectively find out soon enough that this “stone” was a fake, and we’ll have the last laugh.

Regarding your theory:

It's quite an interesting theory, especially the Moon Clan bit (although, that could just be the shape of their island).

Although, there is a slight hiccup. V found the Stone of Jas in a cave at the beginning of the 5th Age (according to RSW, I always imagined the story was older by that's just me) and it was moved by those of a "higher Astral Path". This means if Guthix did hide it, it wasn't where we found it in While Guthix Sleeps. That is, unless someone found it and moved it where V found it, only for the Astral Walkers to eventually return it.

Assuming that no-one else found it between the Astral Walkers moving it and While Guthix Sleeps, all defensive measures weren't of Guthix's standards - they were the best the Moon Clan could do.

However, even if a decoy, it's still immensely powerful as it created Rune Essence (if RSW is true on the date). That raises a flag as to the point of it being a decoy in the first place.

But even if Guthix didn't hide it, that doesn't contradict it being a fake. It could have been a decoy the whole time. In that, Guthix never made an effort to hide it.

But if it was a decoy the whole time, how did Zamorak become a god (assuming speculation is true that he even had the stone)?

Regarding your motivation to create this theory;

The entire point of the fake was for it to be a decoy. It had always existed, as a distraction for the real thing.

Um...3mpty...I've always gotten the impression that Guthix, or at the very least his guardians follow a path that is in many ways opposite to your ideas. They seem to preach a way of active balance. And more importantly they yelled at us when we gave Zanik free will from her god.

Yet Juna approves of our deeds with Azzanadra.

It would seem his followers are as much bound to opinion as everyone else. Tongue

Actually that's another example of the Zanik phenomenon. Freeing Azzanadra is freeing one of Cookies's most powerful servants/ weapons. This threatens Zamorak who is a usurper. He is a usurper against a rightful god, who Juna wants back. All that Guthix seems to care about is that the gods get their due

Part of me doesn't mind and will allow you to discuss the Stone here.
Another part of me isn't amused and thinks you should discuss you idea on another thread of your own possession.

Another unassociated part wants to sell all of my Battles in Time to make enough money for a 3DS (because there is more than enough there), but the other part isn't certain whether I should keep them for old times sakes.
