New "Classic" Monsters
First topic message reminder :
Like Vampires, Werewolves, Zombies, Dragons and Witches/Wizards before them (and I'm sure many more), some creations just stick and get obscured into all sense of fiction. Dragons probably less so because they aren't human-ish — we seem to like monsters who can hide out in the open or attack at home. But what new monsters d'you reckon could make the list of classics that people write about for years to come?
Existing "Classics"
• Vampires
• Werewolves
• Zombies
• Witches/Wizards
• Demons/Possession
• Ghosts
• Constructs
Our "Classics"
• Orcs
• Weeping Angels

Re: New "Classic" Monsters
Ahhhh... DeviantART. They hate Twilight over there (for good reason, I read the first chapter of the first book, and found that I knew the storyline already.) By the way, why is it called a "saga"? I though that was what those stories of Vikings were.

Re: New "Classic" Monsters
I thought saga was just a collection of stories that run in a series. Usually when there's more than three 'cause otherwise we call it a trilogy.
Breaking Dawn seems... like a pointless addition. Isn't it a story about their daughter... and that they summarised it in a couple lines didn't fuel me with confidence.

Re: New "Classic" Monsters
I've seen only parts of the first twilight movie. I got forced to stand in line for an hour and a half on the opening day of new moon, and it was watchable, but was really only worth it because of who I took.
The story was interesting enough, but it would have been better if they all had Transylvanian accents.

Re: New "Classic" Monsters
I'd have liked it that much more if the werewolves had some element of were- in their appearance. Like when he jumped over her in the trailer and started growing fur I was like- wow, this might be cool! He turned into a timberwolf.

Okay, remind me how BEING HUMAN doesn't count as the were part?

I think he was talking about their wolf form. It's usually anthropomorphic.

The series ( I took my idea of a saga from Discworld ) it embodied every single romance novel cliche. These books are made to appeal to 10-15 year old girls, not the normal, civilized population of the world.

Oh well I'm sorry that authors don't conform to the norm, I'm sure we'd all love it if authors always conformed to what had already been done. Personally I think a full on wolf is much cooler than some pathetic, awkward, anthropomorph

Re: New "Classic" Monsters
I don't mind originality and I'm not trying to say everyone should comply to trend... and I'm sorry for offending you with my opinion (again). But people are happy to say that the vampires' unconventional reaction to light is crappy (shiny) - so why is it so bad for me to dislike the unconventional wolves. When I see the wolves I think of them ripping things apart with their mouths - it's good - but I prefer the arms that anthros have to offer. There's something to be said for a werewolf being able to hold things/you before it eats you.
I have two favourites for vampire lore;
• Vampirism is spread through exchanging bodily fluids - so the victims are usually entirely disembowelled so there is no chance of them getting up. Vampires have generally heightened senses and improved physique (resilience, agility, healing time, etc). They aren't immune to damage - but it takes raw strength to rip them apart. Sensitivity to light and shiz is optional - but normally only to give the protagonists a fighting chance.
• Vampirism is something that the vampire chooses to spread - either by having the victim drink their blood or whatever. Quirky lores such as not being able to cross the threshold and sensitive to UV light are cool for storyline if nothing else. Whether the victim is killed or not is the choice of the vampire. Whether vampires have a built-in Ring of Charos depends on how crappy it's used in the story... in some it's just very good persuasive skills, but some people just cannot be persuaded.
By definition there are far better things you could call a vampire. Life-force monster. The weeping angels are technically vampires... as is that where guy with mouths on his hands from Jackie Chan. And all those monsters that devour youth and age and life.

Re: New "Classic" Monsters
Originallity's wonderful, but Meyer single-handedly ruined vampires by deciding they ought to sparkle. . .
What's more, now everyone seems to be milking the vampire bandwagon! Pretty much every second young-adult author is filling their stories wuth them, so much for "originallity".
Oh well. . . it aught to be pretty interesting to see the look's on the audiences faces onc ethey see the fourth film. . .

Re: New "Classic" Monsters
I don't understand the point of the fourth book... if it were a film trying to squeeze more money out of a franchise then I'd understand, but generally books have more respect than that. They don't usually milk fame because the author is writing for enjoyment. It's be like writers coming up with an 8th Harry Potter after finishing the 7th... not something the author wrote prior to a film.

Amen to that whole post! Except for Meyer ruining vampires. She only ruined any new vampire media. Dracula is always going to be cool, whether or not new vampires sparkle (How exactly does sparkling have anything to do with dying in a very painful manner?).

Re: New "Classic" Monsters
I like Doctor Who's explanation of why vampires don't have a reflection. It's a perception filter. Basically they've got a device that's getting into your mind and telling you what they look like - meaning your brain is creating the image. But when you're looking at a reflection your brain doesn't know what to do so it leaves it blank.
Re: New "Classic" Monsters
I'm really going off on a tangent here, but does anyone still want me to contact Ark, and ask him if he wants to join?
I, er.. kinda forgot last time I was asked.
