Zoanthropy - Group Project!™
First topic message reminder :
It's time to get some sort of Project of the Month back up and running!
I've decided that it's about time I finish something, and by "I" I mean all of you!
Zoanthropy! I suggest you take a gander at the Archaeology thread, as that is the standard we should aim for! They general concept for our version of the commonly suggestion transformation skill is one that doesn't use potions, or pouches. Instead, you must capture spirits and allow them to posses you! But where we go in terms of creature is up to you guys! In World of Warcraft they have only a few beasts - bear-form, aqua-form, cat-form, etc. It's not like summoning with a big list. A thread on the forums has something similar, he has very few types of beast, and instead has it that levelling unlocks further abilities with a small selection of creatures. The two methods each have their pros and cons, few creatures mean players can easily pick out favourites and develop good tactics - a Summoning-style system means there is lots of variety, but usually the higher-levelled ones are better meaning all the earlier levels are almost wasted. I vote for a handful of creatures, but that's just me.
Oh, and is anyone good at drawing simple?

Make that more RuneScapey... it's a hand becoming clawed and padded.
A numen has appeared!
Possible Numens
Were-transformations

Ring of Charos

A numen has appeared!
- Spoiler:
Numens are invisible to those not in possession of the Trinket of Sight (can be bound into an amulet, ring or bracelet to save inventory space), and they do not appear on the mini-map. It's entirely possible to receive a numen and not even be aware of it, whilst other players training nearby could be laughing at you because a ghostly-bear is back-handing you and you don't even know it's there. Note that Numens are "curious" - this means they will follow the player and not attack unless provoked. If ignored, like many of our retired Randoms, they will make "hollow attacks" at the player - these do not hurt, but it means the numen is about to cross.
To catch a numen you require a baited vessel - these need to be discussed, but it's effectively an item for the numen to inhabit and an rare, specific drop from the beast as bait (Summoning could use the same rare items, such as a "Wish Bone" from chickens rather than raw chicken). The main thing that needs to be debated is if vessels should be a specific item, or from a collection of items (it had originally been planned that you could, for example, use something like Iron Claws as a vessel, and wielding them is what triggers the transformation - but a generic item could be used, even if it's avialable in grades, such as a Rusty Vessel, etc).
To use the vessel effectively you should weaken the numen - however, you can try to capture it at full health. A numen cannot be 1-hit KO'd. If you try to capture a numen and it is angered (whether it's because you didn't weaken it first, or you just go an unlucky numen - the higher your level, the better your chances) - it will either fight to the death, or fly into the ground and inhabit a corpse. This causes a skeleton/zombie to rise. If we go for a small amount of numens, then the skeleton/beast could be monster specific - otherwise, all numens could just luckily find the same shaped skeleton down there.
Possible Numens
- Spoiler:
Appearances are determined by which of the particular creature you kill, such as a Grizzly and Black bear, but the form itself is generic and each will differ only minutely from the former.- Bear - Grizzly, Black, Polar, etc.
- Wolf -Wolf, Snow, Dire, not including werewolf, etc.
- Cat - Spined Larupia, Sabre-toothed Khytt, Horned Graahk, Dual-Phinned Mahryn, etc.
- Lizard - Lizards, Crocodiles, Daggonoth, dinosaur-like creatures etc.
- Dragon - Dragons, Wyrms, Salamanders, etc.
- Bird - Various hunter creatures.
- Brute - Jogres, Ogres, Cyclopses, possibly Ork, possibly Avianese, etc.
- Fish - Various fish and crustacean.
- Pig/Bovine - Cows, Yaks, Broav, Tri-Tusked Bhoar, Dhyllo [this creature is heavily armoured, pun or armadillo] etc.
- Critters - Rats, Mice, Raccoons, Aardvarks, Ferrets, Pandas, etc.
- Insects - Spiders, bugs, harpies, etc.
- Stallion - Unicorn, Dark Unicorn, the Stern, etc.
More please.- Bear - Grizzly, Black, Polar, etc.
Were-transformations
- Spoiler:
- The standard transformation is where the numen corrupts your physical form so that it becomes its own. However, a sort of "random" with the skill is that numens will occasionally prefer your genetic make-up to its own, and this will result in a were-transformation. These are animal-enough that you don't look human, but you still have that humanoid feel. This is why you cannot directly become a werewolf, on top of a werewolf being a curse and not a species.
Harpies
- Spoiler:
The Stern
- Spoiler:
Ring of Charos
- Spoiler:
- It's always been hinted that the ring consumes us. One of the concepts with Zoanthropy is that the host must expel the numen before long else it will consume them - ie, take over completely. Fortunately the character does this without player interaction. The Ring of Charos would be beefed up, epically, but you could only wear it for an 30 minutes before the "The Ring of Charos begins to burn on your finger, you decide it'd be safer to stow until it cools." The Ring cools down after an hour, and you can use it again. I'm not sure how this should work for quests, whether quest interaction should be excluded from the rings cool-down effect, or you should just have to wait. Maybe it'd be better if the Ring had charges, and a 24 hour cool-down (if it's upgrade is truly epic). Quest intereaction would simply not affect charges.

Also all of those seem very redundant and your separations don't hold up for me

Re: Zoanthropy - Group Project!™
It depends. In Jackie Chan the bull makes you invulnerable, the "immortal" character in Heroes is also invulnerable - the character in Heroes, however, was not immortal in the sense of can never die as his brother (the Haitian) killed him be destroying his mind (although the Haitian could have just used his power-cancelling ability and just killed him in a normal way).
Healing is never the same, however, healing must allows you to overcome injury and, sometimes, illness. Jack Harness in Torchwood is "forever alive" as opposed to immortal, he can be killed and everything, but he'll "come back" or "wake up". He was blown up in series three and regrew in the body-bag - it still hurts though, immensely.
I can't remember what cartoon is was, but some guy achieved immortality from some Egyptian tomb or something like that. His immortality was the sense he had some sort of forcefield around him that prevented anything from coming into contact with him. He accidental, I think, killed his daughter when she ran to hug him because she was thrown off by the magic into some sharp ornament. So... he killed himself. This was perhaps the worst form of immortality I've seen.

Re: Zoanthropy - Group Project!™
Random opinions (better?) about Immortality, Invulnerability and Invincibility. Immortality means you can't die from old age. It's that simple. Invulnerability means that nothing can weaken you, nor can you become sick and die as a result, although you can be killed by force. Invincibility means that you can't be killed by force (bio-weapons don't count), but you can die of old age and diseases.

Re: Zoanthropy - Group Project!™
I don't see how those relate to this thread.
Although, I think those are more opinions than fact. I usually use invulnerable/invincible synonymously to be immune to physical damage, immortality being immune to age and sickness. I don't really have a third kind.

Re: Zoanthropy - Group Project!™
really answering the beginning of this thread. (sorry, haven't got time to read through all 26 pages xD)
HOW to summon. If anyone have played rappelz before, you know that hunting monsters may drop creature cards. and ever creature spirits (Wolfs spirits). To successfully summon a creature, is first to try to tame it, then kill it. If you successfully get it tamed (its quite hard to get it sealed in your card). Then you can put the card in a creature formation and summon it.
It could be made in a similar way, only that YOU are turned into the beast. You could try to hunt spec. monsters, who could drop their souls or spirits Then trying to mix it together (as herblore and summoning together or something).
(Ive been working on a Druid skill of my own so..)
The easiest thing to is like, making a potion, drinking it and then "GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH" transforming into a beast..
I think I may have missed some important parts in between page 2-25 but...

Re: Zoanthropy - Group Project!™
Sounds intriguing.
In the 25 pages you've not really missed much that you haven't proposed, you've just taken the acquiring to a new level. However, the vessel part is something I've become sentimental to... so I may need convincing to switch to cards rather than items.

Re: Zoanthropy - Group Project!™
well you have some "empty" creature cards or something and try to seal the spirits into the cards. its not taking so much in the inventory and we may develop it more later ;D
this is from my druid guide. "How to make Unicorn Potion" its just a bit like combined summoning and herbloring. but it could be made in other ways.. a spirit of a unicorn + vessel or something + some mysterious combination commands and.. you end up with a unicorn card (that you may transform into..)

Re: Zoanthropy - Group Project!™
Vessel + Unicorn Horn = Baited Vessel
Have the baited vessel on your persons when fighting the spirit.
A Unicorn Vessel.
Similar system really, 'cept I have vessel instead of amboule and instead of two items I have one and a spirit.

We already can have an Octopus can't we? It's not called Paul though.
I don't get what the Yōkai have to do with Zoanthropy, if I'm completely honest. Or how having one as a pet would be any different to Summoning (aside from the distinction between pet and familiar). But maybe that's just me? They would probably make an interesting addition to Summoning, if that's what you meant however.

I'd rather not take my pick as, out of contexts, they are all still completely irrelevant.
Well, all save from Tsukumogami, which could be relevant. But I don't see even them working beyond shitz and giggles.

CRAP! I edited your post instead posting a new one. And I don't even know how I made that mistake.
"If they were a familiar"
Summoning isn't this thread.
Also, it's not just toys. It's just the soul of an object. They aren't always vengeful, either, are they?

Re: Zoanthropy - Group Project!™
it should NOT be easy to recive someones soul. (harder --> easier. lvl 1-lvl99)
especially if it is something rare. You should not be able to do this kind of magic at all monsters at the beginning. only some basic, common monsters. then at a higher lvl, you could get more rarer and uncommer monsters's souls.
Okey simple by that. Kill it, a lot of times (its all depending on luck when to get souls). All could be start with a simple tutorial Quest how to do that and what to do with it what.
do some odd magic, with the soul and the vessel. A formation of something, if succeeded youll end up with this beastcard or spell your soul belonged to, if failed, both the vessel and the soul could disappear. It could simple fail and fall into small pieces and fragments on the ground, unuseable.
Then you could transform (using the card or spell) and end up being that (beloved) beast.
then what?? any attack skills (other than slash, crush, the usual ones). Claws, bite, roar etc. special attacks could then be the element that the beast that your soul belonged to had. (a dragon, - fire fire and fire... for example)
