Wheel of Time
General discussion of WoT
6 weeks till Towers of Midnight is released.
Brandon Sanderson has released chapter 8 as a sample on his website
TOR has released the prologue in e-book form for $2.99
Brandon Sanderson reading the very beginning of the prologue can be found
Oh good, for a second I felt really bad, but you'ce read CoS so you know what happens to her.
@ rbie: You're reading it and it irks you greatly? why continue dearest masochistic orb? I am the fawning fanboy who loves Jordan and thinks he writes better than tolkien, a canonical figure of epic fantasy, yet even I cannot fathom why you would subject yourself to him (although maybe sanderson will be more your style)

Re: Wheel of Time
Yep, The Wheel of Time and I have a tumultuous relationship. On the one hand, it's on an utterly magnificent scale, involving a world realized in unbelievable detail and complexity, centered on a metaphor stunning in simplicity and beautiful in realization.
On the other, Jordan is self-indulgent in the extreme, filling chapter upon chapter with the patterns on the floor of a palace a character passes through for the briefest of moments and the exact arrangement of colors on the fringe of an Aes Sedai's dress. And his sentence structure is nightmarish.
That said, I wouldn't change anything about them. Jordan's genius in the plot and ebb and flow of his writing, as opposed to in the words themselves. The Wheel of Time is incredible in the big picture, though (in my opinion) flawed in the small. I tend to work in the small picture - I edit my work painstakingly, word by word, I find typos in absolutely everything I read - which is why I have trouble with him, sometimes.

Re: Wheel of Time
I seem to be the only one who shed no tears upon watching Toy Story 3.
I'm only on the eighth chapter of Shadow Rising. Jordan may go into unnecessary detail from time to time, but overall, I think he paints a vivid picture. I'm adoring the series so far, but I'm not entirely without my gripes:
Romance, for example, isn't one of Jordan's greatest strengths, I'd say. Take Lan and Nynaeve; their intimate conversation in the Blight seemed to come out of nowhere, unless I missed something mentioned earlier.
The abundance of sub-plots going on at once sometimes seem a bit scattered. For example, what ever happened to Bors? And not everyone will realise that "Wormwood" is actually Fain, the first time they hear of him (which would do nothing more than confuse, since he shows up in Book3's prolouge and isn't mentioned again until Book4).
It's easy enough to keep up with, though it sometimes feels like a memory test, rather than a story to be enjoyed. That being said though, I still love it.

Re: Wheel of Time
The issue with the subplots only becomes worse - although Fain is actually an important character - and what begins as a slight excess of description is apparently nearly suffocating by books 10 and 11. At the moment I'm only past the prologue of Book 8.
Anyway, don't mean for this to turn into a WoT analysis thread although it might not be such a bad idea to make one, assuming we all have additional thoughts on it.

Re: Wheel of Time
Okay, so he's not a narrow minded author who feels the need to fixate on some core set of characters, war is complex, the world is complex, everythin is so damn complex. He allows for us to understand how the war is playing out across the Westlands and even into seanchan.

Re: Wheel of Time
I'm not against the complexity. The complexity is artistic and intelligent. The sub-plots themselves too, are each good stories in their own right. It's just that there seems to be more sub-plots and mysteries introduced in each book than there are ones solved.
Don't think I'm slandering the series, because I'm not. I love The Wheel of Time! I just wish sometimes that we'd see a little more closure here and there, especially when genuinely hateable characters like Liandrin are involved. (The bitch!)
But I'm only on Book 4. My opinion on the series' flow is a barely developed one.

Re: Wheel of Time
I know. It's uncommon for Jordan to got into the perspective of characters like Liandrin - among those whose perspective we see from, she's among the most detestable. I mean, even when we're in the Forsaken's heads, the cool factor nearly overwhelms disgust entirely. At least for me. The Forsaken are my favorite characters I'm very very interested to see what happens to Sammael after a...certain spoiler-free incident in Aridhol...
Mordeth is my favorite 'character' next to the Forsaken. The evil which is eviler than evil...so awesome.

Re: Wheel of Time
W-Wait, Sammuel lasts into Book 8!? Wow. And there I was thinking he was going to be hunted down during Book 4.
It's common for the antagonistic group to be among a readers' favorite characters. Evil groups are awesome!

Re: Wheel of Time
Well...honestly It's unclear what will happen to Sammael, we don't know if Mashadar acts on a level similar to Balefire (or has the same effect).
Also: Moridin, Graendal and Demandred are for the epic win
Also: Also: If you don't want spoilers blaze, don't look up Moridin.

Re: Wheel of Time
Mashadar? Do they return to Shadar Logoth?
Well. . I suppose they had too. It's too interesting a place to be mentioned only once then forgotten.

Re: Wheel of Time
So, my tentative plan is to have caught up by the time A Memory of Light is released. That's at the very least a year away, so I'm not thinking it will be too hard. Plugging along through The Path of Daggers now - flew through the first chapters up until that big thing we'd been building towards for like 3 books.
Reading is easy for the moment - there seems to be a big Perrin and Faile chunk in the middle here. They're my favorite WoT couple

Re: Wheel of Time
I should really get on with reading (After Bill Bryson of course).
It took some time to get the books with the right cover. (The black ones with colourful wheels)
Also I must admit, I'm not really a fan of any of the characters. Except the Grove guy, whose name I just forgot, and who I'll remember as soon as I hit send.
EDIT: Loial. See?

Re: Wheel of Time
Yeah, Loial's one of my favorite characters too.
I don't think any of the central characters annoy me, but I will say I don't think I've ever seen a character in as much stubborn denial as Perrin. I mean, c'mon, after his "wolf imbuement" he spent three books thinking about it like "Nope! It isn't happening. Put it out of your head and it allll goes away!" despite the fact that Elyas was perfectly fine about it, and it's not as if the wolves were going to hurt him. Hell, they wanted to protect him! How's that a bad thing?

Re: Wheel of Time
I'd taken a break for a while, but picked up Book 5 a little while ago. Just finished it today.
Story's as great as always; Rand's struggle to unite the world while fighting his personal enemies and looming madness is always captivating. And seeing Liandrin finally get her ass handed to her was indeed delightful.
The sudden death at the end saddenned me, however. I liked that guy.
