Evolution?
First topic message reminder :
Environmental adaptation is evolution, how can one make sense while the other doesn't?
I can't remember what it was.

Re: Evolution?
Ah, I was talking about Mutation solely in that arguement. When it comes to inheriting genetics from parents, thats a different matter entirely.
Either way, the point I was trying to make in the orevious arguement was that such processes such as evolution takes a stunningly long amount of time, due to the randomness of it. And also, I did say that my arguement was somewhat abstract, which doesnt exactly help me, but hey.
There is a single Bacterium. It divides into two Bacteria. Ths keeps going until there's, say a hundred of them. They spread out, some of them going to the, uh... Equator. The others decide to stay where they are. Now, eventually, they start to change. Mutation, etc, I've said it before. They turn in, I dunno, Protozoa. These keep changing and changing until the thing turns into a fish or something. It develops metal deposits inside it which are passed on, and turn into bones. Blobs of tissue collide inside one of them and eventually form organs. These lesser being become larger fish-things, go onto land with legs, and turn into something far more fanciful. Mammals, apes. These then are able to walk, as you said, and turn into humans.
Y'know, every time I say that, it becomes more convincing.
Actually, forget it. When I think about evolution, my brain instantly tells me its wrong. It's like asking mself how many arms I have, to me. I was brought up to be a religeous man, and I couldn't change that even if I wanted to. I know that the universe didn't start in a 'Big Bang', I know that it was God the eternal, the one who knows no time, that created the universe. I've thought it so long, I can't change that thought in my head.
After years of thought, I've come to conclusion. Evolution can happen. Given enough time, one species can change from one to another. I don't disprove enolution anymore, and I doubt I ever will again. Even though I know that God himself made the world and everything in it, evolution could have done it too. In fact, the truth could be that God simply made some of the things. Evolution was there diversify, and make the world that we live in a truly wonderful place. I've studied evolution enough now to know that its probably true. My opinion is forever changed, if it can be.
Anyways, thanks for enlightening me. Don't take me wrong, I honestly don't normally talk like that. But I think today is going to be a nice day.

Re: Evolution?
I don't get why God and evolution can't go hand in hand - evolution doesn't remove the need for god. In fact, evolution only really contradicts a tiny segment of Christianity - that God made man. And it doesn't even fully contradict that, God could have still created life and the capacity for evolution - even if he did not plan us specifically. But then, he's often described as all-knowing - he would have known we would have happened.

I'm a Deist; I believe in the Architect solely because it's logical to believe that something came first (although I'd happily believe something came from nothing if a reasonable theory/proof was given). But I'm an apathist, I don't care. God is an interesting theory, and I reserve my right to change my mind.

Re: Evolution?
I don't get... Why can't it be infinite? Why can't the Big Bang just be one in a row of a series of universe expansions/contractions?

Re: Evolution?
It could be. But infinite is hard to comprehend... where did the space-time trampoline come from. Was there a first bounce, and it's just been going ever since? Will it ever stop springing?

Re: Evolution?
Agreed with 3mpty on the wholearchitect thing, although I also am amiable to the idea taht it is merely one of the infinite number of possible combinations of mathematical laws and constructions.
