Re: Eastern Promises
I don't really think players should be able to learn the martial arts, it's lame.
However, some weapons should have unique combat styles - which would include martial arts, maybe.

Re: Eastern Promises
not as a skill but improvment to other combat skills?

Re: Eastern Promises

Re: Eastern Promises
but still include it? just a small piece NOT the whole expansion idea.. then we can make a own martial art thread and talk about that.. but just something small.. and tiny.. just a including improvment...
WHAT can we take with us to an eastern expansion
- some martial arts. (we need to figure out something really awsome)
- improvemts to sculpture, crafting, construction (to build eastern things)
- weaponsmith (other then the scimitar?)
- herblore (and maybe even medicine? i thinking of arabian teachers during the crusade)
- something

Re: Eastern Promises
Now I need to google those.. (Qi, Youkai I think what it is)
- Spoiler:
- Qi "..is an active principle forming part of any living thing.. [...] Qi is frequently translated as "energy flow". Qi is often compared to Western notions of energeia or élan vital (vitalism), as well as the yogic notion of prana, meaning vital life or energy, and pranayama, meaning control of breath or energy. The literal translation of "qi" is air, breath, or gas. Compare this to the original meaning of the Latin word "spiritus", meaning breathing; or the Koine Greek "πνεῦμα", meaning air, breath, or spirit; and the Sanskrit term "prana", meaning breath..."

Re: Eastern Promises
Kendo swords? Or sommet.
I don't know, I think some things should remain NPC-only. Something like ninja skills, gymnastics, tree-combat, etc, should be exclusive to the NPCs of specific cultures so has to add an element of variety to fighting them. Giving players the ability to do it is too complex, surely.
I mean, having a katana which has slightly varied attributes to a sword and has a cool fighting animation is okay... you could possibly go as far as to require a short cinematic training session with an NPC as he teaches you how to use it. Martial arts too... they wouldn't work in combat, and thus aren't really worth it.
Maybe have several duel arenas, which make the player perform different fisticuffs - like, in Al Kharid it's fist-fighting, but if you go to the duelling arena in Samaurkand you use martial arts. You don't actually learn martial arts, your character just uses them by default in weaponless fighting. Something like sumo rings is for fun... not actually something you can use generally (even if you can fight NPC sumos, who are programmed for that).

Re: Eastern Promises
Please don't ruin this for us...
Why do we focus on the combat aspects of the culture, rather than elements that have more meaningful sense to them?

Re: Eastern Promises
We're not focusing on the combat... the combat was the first topic to arise and opinions are being given. Mine opinion was that combat shouldn't be affected, but I gave some ideas for how it would be incorporated.
I mean, I can imagine the architecture... but if you want to discuss something, just propose the idea.

- Spoiler:
- the first "Cannons" in Europe where the "Pot de fer" that was loaded with arrows and then was fired with a incredible power (at that time). 1260 Battle of Ain Jalut between the Mamluks and Mongols in the Middle East was earlier than the one in Europe. And was the first battle between mongols and mameluks that the Hand cannon were used.
1453 AD came the Turkish cannon that shoot a 600 kg cannonball as much as 1,600 m. They were heavy but they was the basic.
well I wanted just like a hand cannon or those cannons that were on those ships during the 13th century?
