Start this quest by speaking to Litara, outside the entrance to the Stronghold of Security
[[Normal Litara diologue]]
(If you have the requirements for this quest)
L: Perhaps you could look for my brother for me!
P: I’ll go and take a look, and tell you what I find.
L: Thank you [[Player]]! You shall be rewarded for this!
L: But be extremely careful, there are many dangerous things down there.
P: Can you tell me more about this place?*
OR
P: I’ll start looking now [[terminate dialogue]]
*L: This series of caverns were found when a miner broke the shaft open. We have sent several parties of explorers inside, but all but one have returned. Then my brother decided to go in on his own, and I haven’t seen him since.
P: Who returned?
L: A man by the name of Arsakul. He re-entered recently, but not after making a journal of his journey. He has not returned from his second expedition, but he believes there is more to find within these cursed caverns.
P: Thank you. I’ll start looking now.
Enter the stronghold. On the ground, by the entrance is a skeleton. Search it to find the Stronghold Notes. Read them and you will find a ghost standing before you. Speak to him with a Ghostspeak amulet equipped.
G: You can understand me?
P: Yes, what is your name?
G: I am Arsakul, the explorer. I have explored these caverns and discovered many secrets. What is it you wish to know?
P: How did you die?
A: I am not dead outerlander!
P: (If finished Fremennik Trials) I am not an outerlander. My name is [[Fremennik name]]
P: But you are. There is your body!
A: ...
A: I-I am starting to remember! I was deep within these floors, on the floor of death. Nearby that sacred Cradle of Life I found a strange stone. I tried to move it, and found another stone had moved, opened the way to a passage down. I found three keys and unlocked a doorway. I entered, but was attacked by... by something. I don’t quite remember...
P: Do you have any idea at all?
A: I felt strong magics afoot. I do not like magics. Adventurer, please find this passageway and defeat whatever killed me! I will finally be able to rest peacefully!
P: If I do this, will you help me find someone first?
A: Whatever you say. I will be in your debt.
Traverse down to the bottom of the stronghold in any manner you like. Upon reaching the cradle of life, search for a moveable stone Arsakul mentioned. You will discover it holds a trap, which you need to disarm, which requires 25 thieving and 30 agility. Once you have disarmed it, a passageway will open in the wall. Enter it.
While inside the passage, you will be unable to see further then 4 squares around you, much in the way the barrows passageways work. On the way down, a cutscene will show, where three skeletons slowly shamble out of the darkness. One is a mage, one is a ranger, and the third is a warrior. They will then attack you. You cannot leave the area until you have defeated all three, unless teleporting. Finish them off, and pick up the three keys from the ground. Continue along the passage a bit more until you find a door. Unlock the door and enter.
You will find yourself in a large throne-like room. Enter the room. Suddenly, walls rise from the floor making the room much smaller. A large spirit, called a Vengeful Spirit, rises from the floor.
VS: Leave this place mortal
P: What did you do to the explorer!?
VS: This is not a place for mortals to tread. Lave before I force you away.
P: Never, you’d have to kill me first!
VS: So it shall be.
The Vengeful Spirit attacks with magic and ranged attacks, much like Mysterious Shades in Dungeoneering. Defeat it.
VS: NOOO! My master will not be pleased!
The walls crumble away, but the room is a dead end. Suddenly, Arsakul’s spirit appears before you.
A: You did it! You defeated the creature! Thank you so much!
P: I need to you tell me something now.
A: Anything adventurer.
P: A young woman, Litara, has lost her brother. He went down here and never returned. Have you seen any sign of him?
A: Let me think...
A: Yes, he was last on the third level, by the Scorpions.
Travel up to the third level into the room with scorpions. They will no longer be aggressive. In the corner of the room you will see a man huddled into a ball. Speak with him.
P: Hello? Are you Litara’s brother?
H: Yes. Hiliruk.
P: Your name is Hiliruk?
H: Yes. Hungry. Trout?
P: I will bring you some trout.
H: Fish. In room.
P: Where?
H: Other side. Use this.
You will see a fishing spot over in the corner of the room. Fish from it and you will get 5 poisonous Trout.
P: Hiliruk, these aren’t safe to eat!
H: Magic.
P: Magic?
H: Yes. Cleanse them.
P: How?
H: 25 Air 15 Fire. Use on Fish.
Do so, and your fish will suddenly be purified into Enriched Trout.
H: Now cook on logs. Here.
He will hand you some Moldy Logs. Light them, and cook the five trout. Speak to Hiliruk
P: Here you are Hiliruk.
H: Thanks
P: Enjoy.
Hiliruk eats the trout, and suddenly stands up.
H: I feel suddenly better! Thank you!
P: What happened to you?
H: I was working my way through this stronghold when something attacked me. It was a dark creature, with a large silver weapon. It nearly killed me, but I escaped into this room.
P: I wonder what that could have been...?
P: Anyway, your sister is really worried about you. Would you like me to bring you back to her?
H: Please do! I’ve been trapped down here for so long.
Lead Hiliruk to the entrance of the third floor. Go up and continue leading him to the first floor. Go up the ladder and he will follow you. Speak with Litara.
P: Litara.
L: Hello [[player]].
H: Hello sister
L: HILIRUK!!!
H: I’m back, thanks to [[player]] here.
L: Thank you so much! I must reward you!

After you close the rewards screen, you will see a cutscene of Hiliruk hugging Litara. Suddenly a dark shadow bursts from the opening in the ground, and grabs Hiliruk.
Strange Shadow: Nothing escapes from my grasp! Not even you [[player]]. I will return for you...
L: Hiliruk!!! No!
Your player starts to run forward, but is blasted backwards by the creature, which vanishes underground with Hiliruk. Shadows slowly gather around the entrance of the dungeon, and Litara falls to her knees, sobbing.

- Spoiler:
Speak with Litara.
L: What WAS that? It took Hiliruk!
P: I don’t know Litara!
L: Please, go after it! I want my brother back!
Enter the Stronghold the usual way. You will be given the choice: Enter the Stronghold, for normal access, or Chase the Beast to continue on with the quest. You cannot bring any equipment except for a pick if you select the second option.
Inside, you will find that the Portals have stopped working, and the doors have been broken as well. Attempt to speak to the door.
P: Excuse me...? Door? Can-can I come through?
D: [[player]] I cannot open for you. The master of this place has commanded me to open for nobody except himself.
P: PLEASE???
D: I’m sorry. No.
P: Then...
1-I’ll kick you down! (Player attempts to kick the door down. If under 50 strength, they take 10 damage, otherwise, they just bounce back)
2-I’ll Mine you apart! (If a player has 60 Mining, the door is mined apart far enough for a small person to climb through)
3-I’l blast you out of the way! (Attempts to cast a spell, which is absorbed by the door)
Once you have broken through the door, try to climb through. This requires 50 Agility. Do the same for the next door, and so on (By using your pickaxe on the doors), until you reach the middle. Some of the doors will not break, and will force you to find an alternate way around. All the monsters are aggressive.
Upon reaching the end, the trapdoor to the next level is closed. In the center of the room is a glowing portal. Move towards it. A cutscene begins.
The room begins to become darker, and a shape slowly rises from the floor. It is the Mysterious Shadow!
MS: Hello [[player]]. You made the mistake of following me...
P: Oh no...
MS: I told you I would come for you... I did*’t think you would make the mistake of coming back towards me...
P: But you took Hiliruk!
MS: Of course, he was mine before you came along! You ruined my plans [[player]], and now you will pay.
The Mysterious Shadow rushes towards you, and shoves you into the portal.
MS: Goodbye [[player]], you will never survive the ravages of war!
The screen turns dark, and you find yourself in a shadowy room.
Slowly, eight level 28 Minotaurs will move towards you from the darkness and attack with ranged and melee attacks. Kill each of them to receive eight bank tokens pieces. You need ten to form a full token.
Next, six level 16 Goblins attack you. Defeat them each to receive six more bank tokens. You can now use a bank token to make a banker appear before you for five minutes. You may stock up on anything you need for two combat styles.
Speak with the banker first.
B: Hello, you called?
P: Yes, I did. What do you recon I’ll need?
B: Well, I hear whatever is in there is rather... nasty, so I suggest taking more then one style to attack it.
P: Thank you. May I access my bank now?
B: Certainly, but hurry. I can** stay long.
After closing your bank, four level 36 Wolves, and two level 48 Demonic Minotaurs stalk into the room. Defeat them and they will drop a total of six more Bank Tokens. Combine the remaining ten pieces into a second bank token. This will come in handy later.
Now, another portal appears before you. Make sure you are stocked up with your two styles, as well as good food. If you run low, you can use your second token to freeze the battle and re-stock, but be careful, you can only do it once!
Enter the portal.
Inside, you will find a room with sixteen platforms, in a four by four pattern. On the floor of each platform is a frayed Grappling Hook, a needle, and some thread. You will need 50 Crafting to repair each Grapple. On each platform nearby is a spot to hook your grapple to. You will need 50 Agility to successfully toss the grapple over. But this isn’t as easy as you would think. In the middle, a large monster, with half of its body inside a massive portal. On every platform is another one of these portals. This creature attacks with Magical based Ranged attacks when you are far away, and Melee attacks when up close. You must fix the grapples, and create pathways to the platforms that it is on or nearby to attack it.
It is called Raaenarii the Warlord. It is level 167, and can deal a maximum of 382 damage with Melee, and 192 with Magical Range. Prayer is only partially effective, but having over 50 prayer causes your prayer to drain three times slower. It has a giant scythe in its left hand, and a glowing boomerang in the other. Every five attacks it makes it will teleport to another platform. Chase it down and attack it. Once it takes 300 damage from an attack, it will turn on protection prayers against that style.
Once defeated, it will drop a ‘Coldmetal Claw’, which will be explained in the rewards section.
Also, one of the portals will start glowing purple. Make your way to it and enter. You will find yourself standing inside the throne room that you defeated the Vengeful Spirit in during Part One. There is a massive gap in the floor with a cage over it. Strapped to it is Hiliruk. Speak with him
P: Hiliruk! Are you okay?
H: [[player]] you found me! Please help me, that shadow bound me here and said he was going to sacrifice me!
P: But why?
H: He said that he wanted to release his master! Please, unlock me from this cage!
P: What do I need to do?
H: Well, apparently you need to create a magical rune, made out of the components of a human body!
P: What!?!?
H: It shouldn’t be too hard, he said something about the basic elements.
P: But how I would combine four runes?
H: Maybe talk to someone who knows a thing or two about this?
Now, as Rune Mechanics happens to be on the Requirements List, you should remember old Wizard Dougal. Find him and speak with him.
WD: What do you need? I’m busy.
P: I have a challenge for you.
WD: A challenge you say? What about?
P: I challenge you to create a rune combine four elements of the human body!
WD: Four runes together? That’s nearly impossible! You would need some powerful magic from those fairy folk, all four talismans, 20 Pieces of Purified Essence, and hope it doesn’t all explode!
P: Can you do it?
WD: Perhaps, but I will need an Air, Water, Mind, and Body Talisman, as well as 20 pieces of essence, and an blessed staff.
P: I can get all of those!
Get all of those objects (Which requires 25 inventory spaces) and return to Wizard Dougal. He will attempt to charge them all together, but will fail. He will return the items to you.
WD: You must do this the hard way then. Take these to each of those altars and combine them together with this!
He hands you a Binding Necklace (e).
WD: This item holds four charges, each of which will allow you to force the talismans together. Once you have done so, travel to the Ourania Altar – Yes, we know what the ZMI is doing – and use the staff with the combined Talisman. Then use your Pure Essence on the altar and you will create 20 Unfinished Corpse Runes. Use each of them on each other to create a full Corpse Rune.
Go and do so. Go to each of the altars, and use the Air Talisman on one of the others, and so on. For the last altar, simply use the talisman on the altar to charge it. Go to the Ourania Altar, and do what Dougal said. You will then have a corpse rune.
Return to the Stronghold of Security. You will find the portals functioning again. Travel down to the bottom and speak with Hiliruk.
H: Did-did you find it?
P: Yes I did, I had to create it for you, but I found a way to free you!
Use the Corpse Rune on the lock.
A cutscene begins, where the rune dissolves into a pile of dust, which is sucked into the mechanism. The locks clicks, and Hiliruk sits up. Then, without warning, the platform he is sitting on drops into the hole. He screams.
The Mysterious Shadow shimmers into view.
MS: You fell right into my trap [[player]]. Your friend is now dead, as you have allowed me to release my master! He shall reward me greatly.
From the hole in the floor, a darkness rises up, and coils above you.
MS: Welcome, my master
The creature coils towards you.
D: Hello [[player]]. I thank you for my freedom...
P: What-what are you?
Hiliruk suddenly materializes on the floor. The body is dead. Suddenly he starts breathing. The shadow slowly forms into a suit of armor, with wisps of smoke forming the limbs. Slowly it turns into what looks like an ancient man, with wrinkles on every inch of his face. He kneels, and touches Hiliruk. He gasps and dies. The man looks up.
D: I am Death.
Your screen goes dark.
You awake in front of Litara.
L: [[player]] You’re alive!
P: Litara! I’m so sorry! Hiliruk was killed!
L: I know! This old man and that massive shadow just burst out of the hole! The man expanded into a shadow and killed anyone that tried to fight them! They escaped somewhere screaming the names of those they killed. You have to stop them [[player]].
P: I know I do, but I don’t know how.
L: We need to work it out. Together. I’m going to give you a reward. You’ll need it.
