The new-look map looks good! (be honest, even if you just thinking the roads are too wide)

RuneScape's HOT new look! - Page 11 Empty Making RuneScape bigger!

Post by The Empty Lord Thu Jun 11, 2009 6:26 am

First topic message reminder :

All three of these are large/wide images. Even with my high-res, I can only see the width of Baronlands on the World Map (but the other two only just cut off). So... I'd recommend clicking on them to open them in another tab/window to view them more easily. A lot of work has gone into them and I'm satisfied I have done enough. I don't want to plan the whole game, or, at least not for a version I plan on sending to Jagex - so I'm happy with them. Except for the misspelling of "Al Karid". Rage

...although, I've decided to claim it's a tribute to DeviousMud rather than a mistake. Tongue

Lumbridge, detailed, parchment-style;
Spoiler:
Misthalin, detailed, (crude) terrain-style;
Spoiler:
World Map, simplistic, parchment-style;
Spoiler:

Names of new locations are completely random, aside from those with an author (such as "by Psychoboy8" on Agerdomus). So... if you want to bagsy one, go for it. The map uses hexakis gridding and a six-point compass to match. For those who cannot tell, this relates to the stone of Jas' hexakis gridding and I've made up the lore that the magic-matrix was woven into the planet when Guthix did his stuff (whether first time around or not, if you believe in the etch-a-sketch theory).

The sun rises in the Eotres, and sets to the Vesp. "Eotres" means "dawn", and "Vesp" is short for vesper, meaning "evening". North meaning "to the left of the rising sun", and South meaning "the region of the sun". Prior to astrological advancements and further understanding of the magical-matirx within our planet, it was recognised that Gielinor only had four points. A North and South, for magnetic purposes, with Vesp and Eotres making up the the perpendicular axis. However, it was noted that the moon does not orbit perpendicular to the planet and research was carried out. It was decided that the planet must have six cardinal directions as the moon follows an orbit at 60° to North, and sets at 240° to the South. Eotres was moved so that it still, although now more accurately, pointed to the point of the rising sun, and Vesp moved North to match. Lune was the name given for the point of moonrise, and Hath being mistranslated as the point of moonset. "The moon hath set too South" was the correct translation, however, multiple forms of verbs had been dropped from the English language some time in the past (such as thou, hath) and the word Hath wasn't translated, believing it to be a word to mean the moon; "The moon, Hath, set too South." Whilst the mistranslation was identified, the first "official" six-point compass had already been commissioned - thus, the name Hath was adopted.

Some older equipment still uses an "imperial", four-point compass. Fortunately, modern compasses are typically shown with 12 points (the additional points marking North-Vesp, North-Lune, and so on), meaning there still exists a four-point star within the image. Our trusty sextant uses four-cardinal points, North, Eotres, South and Vesp, thus few changes are required (in terms of game-programming*).

*creating a hexakis mapping system might be difficult, although, I don't fully understand how the sextant works anyway... so it might be easy.

Awesome! So much to explore, if this doesn't get included in Player's Gallery, then... Something...

Misthalin alone has a fishing colony, a lumberyard, two large agricultural areas, a Magician's tower, two Prayer Guilds, three new races, a larger involvement from Goblins and Hobgoblins, two new rivers, and much, much more! Including a field of Vampire Cows (what? Count Draynor has to eat something)! Grin

More trivia - taking the same image of RuneScape as when comparing Digsites, should you move it so that the Lumbridge swamps line up, they are identical in size and (nearly) shape! Whilst comparing, you should also notice that the River Lowe follows the River Lumb (far better than the new River Lumb's shape does). Tongue

sorry, but I have to be neutral...

If you were making a new Gielinor, I honestly feel it is a tad bit ambitious to add all this new stuff (mainly because it is SO different form the original)

I guess it runs parallel to the original concept...

It is definitely unique, and would provide a lot of space

Varrock, to me, looks a tad but small as well...

EDIT: Where's Al Karhid and the Shantay Pass?

Wow, that looks good, 3mpty.

Lol, I keep wondering if Jagex is more simple than that. There's a conspiracy? What if there wasn't? What if everything is more straightforward than that?

I'm not remaking "Gielinor" (just yet) - this is only Misthalin. Very little has actually changed (in terms of geology) - the River Lumb follows the same path, the Lumb Fields are already there, in effects, only there's like three and very spaced out. The Burrows is new - but I thought they were a good inclusion, even though I think I've drawn them badly. The swamp is actually the same shape, although, as the map is on a larger scale, you are a smaller dot in it. Wink

Al Kharid lies in Kharid, not Misthalin - just as Falador lies in Asgarnia. This is just one country. Smile

Hunting ground would be good. A small mine maybe? Just some low level clay and stuff. Also nooblet rading goblins, it is rather close to Lumbridge. Could we have an hermit? (Is it called that? Someone who lives alone)

Also I might be far out, but where I come from, one of the big attractions is a church almost covered by a wandering dune. What about an abandoned church half covered with sand?

RuneScape's HOT new look! - Page 11 Morytnorthnew

Bad but basic

Raid town is where the werewolves hunts

Burnt town is new location for all those tormented spirits by ectofunct

Farming town is a ghost run farming village replacing old farm

Could you add red lines and stuff to show the areas? Like... Misthalin has areas, shown in yellow - I'd imagine Morytania would have at least three, maybe four areas wide, each with towns and stuff in them. It looks a bit like that is *the* area. Tongue

Would anyone mind if I moved the Bounty Hunter crater? I'm not drawing the wilderness yet, but I wanted to move it to that corner between the Wilderness and Morytania... like, it smashes into the area that was once the see? Grin

In terms of astrology, I've always pictured Gielinor having two moons - the Bounty Hunter crater was one of them falling from the sky. This moon was named Glourphie, by the elves - after it fell to Gielinor on her dying-day. The name caught on for a while, although few humans know it's significance or remember it anymore. But that's just some story I made up! The other moon... I never named it. Smile

Better. Smile

Lol, does anyone else think that new-look Misthalin could just be the whole of Gielinor several million years in the past (the pangea effect). The burrows becomes the desert, Lumb Fields and Lumbridge swamp are disconnected and become Karamja... Wink
