[P] Indigenous
First topic message reminder :
Anyone got any ideas for indigenous species?
Thus far I've created two; a species of bird and the human-counterpart.
The human-counterpart, the dwallow, are--well, human-ish. They are taller than humans, their skin tones are shades of pale blues and purples, their eyes are large and their noses are flush with their face. They are pseudo-religion, in that they worship (in a respect sense, not a pray sense) a race which preceded them - known by names such as the Builders, Creators, Forerunners, etc - whose technology makes their survival possible. (When doodling, I played around with adding skin-horns/tails that grow from from just above their ears (similar to the Digimon, Veemon) - but I never completely convinced myself).
The bird, which I haven't named, fills an ecological niche provided by the waterfalls - building their nests beneath the waterfall mouths, and darting through the water to catch what ever poor morsel falls over the edge. The dwallow "fish" for these birds, by hanging bait over the edge and then reeling in the catch.

It's not as simple as it sounds. The orb is not perfectly spherical, the designs and face are farely intricate. And there is the business of the halo as well.

Re: [P] Indigenous
Fun fact: Sol is sun in English. It comes from a Roman deity... so I'm guessing any languages that have fornicated with Latin will know what sol means.
It's even the name of the second sun in my fictional universe staring Gielinor.

Re: [P] Indigenous
Well no wonder it means sun in so many languages, it's Latin. Most European languages are derived from Latin and therefore are very similar.
French, Italian, German, Spanish and English are derived from Latin so you can find a lot of links between them. I did study "History of English" at A-Level, so I am clued up as to how it works.
I chose Sol, because they resemble a Sun, but couldn't use Sun, because the sound of Sol was more interesting.

Re: [P] Indigenous
To say "most" and "German and English derived from Latin" is a little inaccurate... Greek, German/Nordic, Slavic and Celtic evolved very separately. Latin merely fornicated with the other languages when the Romans basically conquered Europe. And then there's the whole thing with the Bible lead to learning latin being a sign of upper-class. English is definitely the child of romance and germanic parents, but we're definitely more on the germanic side of the family.
But Sol is a nice word and at least in an English game it works better than "Sun".

Re: [P] Indigenous
I hope I got the Diminor sort of correct. You only said "sorta" (paraphrasing) when I asked what their legs looked like.
(There's a picture on the previous page with a human comparison, in case you didn't see it I dropped it so the whole image would appear larger. // I've attempted to create a 3D dwallow, see the sculptris thread. It kinda of looks a bit fail at the moment - well, not fail, just more like an imp or something - but it was a practice run of the program more than anything. // The Dwallow's skintone chart will likely change each time I upload it...)

Re: [P] Indigenous
well ofc the color may change, but I like having the Basic color as light purple, then add some shadow and deep etc at the end (with sculptris you can paint it and then make a video of it having it circle around so we can see the result ;D.) Great job 3mpty and keep doing this : ) ;D

Move your body when the sunlight dies, everybody hide your body from the scarecrow. Everybody hide.
Re: [P] Indigenous
well, we have to look at the geography too... you know, Dwallows are living in the forest, mostly. Greenlands. Something has to have an effect on them and their color. what if there would be other Dwallows... other classes.
different classes different colors? A mighty color = mighty class
the workers, peasents are the lower class (mostly) and have a "low" color dark, brown, darkblue, darkpurple etc.
Craftsmen, Traders and dwallows who do something for a change having more fine colors, olive, cyan...
Military, soldiers.. having hard and mighty colors as Red, Blue, Yellow, Purple (different rank?)
Priests, kings, leaders - some more powerful colors Orange? Silver, gold, Grey,
it would separate them abit (back to the Tribe question. One tribe having one color, another tribe another color) Just a suggestion, maybe a good one. I hope : )

Re: [P] Indigenous
I think colour should just be race, anything relating to class might be subtly racist.
Also, I don't think their skin should change colour... aside from tanning. And a rainbow of colours might be overdoing it.
But they could wear the colours, I suppose.
(insert me going on a tangent about a variation of suntan)
Or, maybe, rather than due to sunlight, there could be something else that effects it... so maybe related to something laborious. Umm... the forest would probably be more oxygenated than anywhere industrial or cavernous, so maybe their skintone gets darker with an abundance of oxygen.

Re: [P] Indigenous
hmm, you got a point of having classes making it racist, didnt thought of that.
So if they're not living near or in the forest the skin is lighter, due to the not so much oxygen, that "usually" comming from the deep forests ;D idk if I got you right but I hope so. Great Idea though

yeah... European dominance didn't help...
Why not have their skin get lighter with the abundance of carbon dioxide instead of oxygen? I mean that would shock plenty of players who are used to having the nobility being light skinned. That is, if you want a racial class/caste system.
I think Dark has already talked about the Diminor ranks and how they are recognized with different colors. Remember, the Diminor are the upper side of Dwallow society. I would imagine all or most of the Dwallow being in a peasant/nomadic class.

Re: [P] Indigenous
Peasants only within diminor society, I guess. Although, the diminor are definitely a minority (based on Dark's percentages)... so the dwallow make up pretty much all the classes. Although, the dwallow are a content race... they don't so much see it as classes. I guess you could say the dwallow are communists - they accept their place, the purpose they serve.
However, I wouldn't say they're nomadic outside the Protectorate.
People may still use the fountains, but is the design more to be decorative than to serve a function. Since they'd probably have indoor versions, and the aqueducts carry water otherwise (lol, I just pictured draining being used to get water into buildings).

Re: [P] Indigenous
Erm...did you just say the diminor are the top of dwallow society...that's so wrong...their more like a private contracting firm that's got a vast swath of dwallow territory that they've sworn to protect. They trade with the dwallow, and treat them as equals. The High Protector himself, who all diminor must treat with utmost respect, will allow any dwallow to speak to him as an equal.
