GEOGRAPHY
for the discussion of Pallis various geographical features, overall structure, composition etc.

As I envision it Pallis is a land half formed of nearly barren rock and huge mountains, while the rest is covered in lush forests and the few seas.

I reckon the ground should be cracked, rather than direct mountains. I mean, they would function as mountains, but viewed from above they are cracks. Smile

Post by Dark Avorian Tue Nov 16, 2010 11:20 pm

So I'm gonna try an overview what I have so far in MY head, see what y'all think

THE EDGELANDS

This is the name given to the swath of land close to the edge of Pallis. It is equatorial and therefore rather warm. It is kept well supplied with water as it is the first recipient of mistrise. It also is closes to the mouths of the creators...

As such the edgelands are close to a tropical jungle, although some has been converted to farmlands. The edgelands end by convention at the point where the jungles begin to peter out and the barren areas can begin.

THE SUNKEN SEAS

Around the edge there were originall 3 large seas, about evenly spaced, that were close to but not too close to the edge. However the rivers going from these seas to the edge have slowly eroded massive canyons and drained the seas. The bottom... is

Swamp?
Rich farm;and and forests?
Barren rock bowl?

THE BARRENLANDS

The barrenlands are the large areas of bare rock where there is almost no soil. They are said to almost warp when mistrise covers them, and the swooping formations that cover them don't disabuse anyone of this notion.

THE INNER SEAS

The few inner seas are surrounded by areas of greenery, and usually have retaining mountains around them. The areas around them are a more moderate clime than that of the edge jungles.

Great again, you're on a roll.

Also, some kind of polar area... I suggest something along the lines of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiga .

THE BOREAL LANDS (I just learned that word)
The Boreal lands, claimed by some tribes to stretch infinitely. Everpines (They never stop growing) in all sizes are the only plants managing to break through the choking blanket of the snow. Nothing lives here, but rare animals and few primitive tribes, travelling around. (Or something like that)

How many seas are we having? Shock

Also, is Pallis a horizontal half rather than a vertical half?

Ooh, ooh, and how high? 'cause it's going to be cold either way, surely? Wink

So... angled? Tongue

Dark Avorian wrote:Okay: If we split pallis geographically between green-areas and barren areas then the dwallow take the green while the mogrul take the barren.

If it's split vertically (edit: or more vertically than not), then the entire middle could be barrenlands; cracked, dry ground. But if seas separated the outer regions it would create a reason why the dwallow would ever have to stray into mogrul territory.

I'm learning animation next year, and "knows how to code" is a bit vague... I know some C# and VB, but Java or DirectX are probably more appropriate languages. Tongue

Pallis wouldn't actually be that cold... What makes mountains/plateaus so cold is that the vast majority of the air around them at that height is cold, and that air is cold because the ground that absorbs heat is so far away( and the air is thinner). If all of pallis is higher than the lower world, then except for at the very very edges you would have climes similar to the appropriate lower world latitude.

My new idea for the edge regions + sunken seas

THE BRINK

The brink is a cold place, it's main inahbitants are the Diminor who keep the Mouths running. It is cut with ravines from streams running from the encircling mountains.

THE ENCIRCLING MOUNTAINS

A ring of mountains that keeps Pallis from losing air and water too quickly. These mountains provide a huge effect on the climate of Pallis. They are infested with remnants of the Forunners. Huge mountain cities, massive spires, and more. These mountains are one of the few places where all 4 sects of the Diminor mix and mingle

EDGE JUNGLE

Just Inside the mountains is the mystical and tropical edge jungle. It is almost completely bereft of remnants.

SUNKEN SEAS

Just inside the edge Mountains, these four basins were originally there to provide a large source of water for the edge, but somehow the water cound clefts and carved a huge canyon to the edge in all three cases. They are now bereft of water except at the bottom.

The bottom is a large swamp which fades into massive rocky cliffs. These swamps are one of the most magical places in Pallis, as the mists of the lower world fill them even at the the mist's lowest point.

Wait, wait, wait, wait. Tongue

I'm so lost as to how Pallis now looks. XD

Can you still going from being somewhat inland, straight to the edge and jump off? How close is the ring of mountains to the edge?

Like this? 'cept rotated all the way 'round?
[P] Geography Confus10

(that's trees, not grass)

I'm trying to picture the seas, but all I'm getting is a river that flows all the way around. Confuse

My brain is unfunctioning. Sad

you mean it is wet but dry.. or a dry swampland? Great idea!

I fantasizing about making a "trailer" of Barrenlands using som "hightech" graphics and animation.. I got everything in my head, only problem is to get it out in the right way.. ;D you know like having a slide animation from one edge to the other and through the many new cities and races.. Just to catch the O____O even more ;D

MONOLIFF
In the middle of the most barren of the Barrenlands lies a circular valley (Some might call it an unusually large crater). In the center of this crater is a massive monolith made of polished black stone. All around it, in the bottom of the valley, a city has appeared, more like a slum actually, made of temples and other houses of worship, of varying quality. It's inhabitants are mainly, religious fanatics all claiming they know the purpose of the monolith, greedy merchants trying to wrestle a coin from the purses of the religious fanatics, scurvy bandits trying to get same coin from the pockets of the merchants, and some more fanatics failing to keep law and order.
