The new-look map looks good! (be honest, even if you just thinking the roads are too wide)

RuneScape's HOT new look! - Page 18 Empty Making RuneScape bigger!

Post by The Empty Lord Thu Jun 11, 2009 6:26 am

First topic message reminder :

All three of these are large/wide images. Even with my high-res, I can only see the width of Baronlands on the World Map (but the other two only just cut off). So... I'd recommend clicking on them to open them in another tab/window to view them more easily. A lot of work has gone into them and I'm satisfied I have done enough. I don't want to plan the whole game, or, at least not for a version I plan on sending to Jagex - so I'm happy with them. Except for the misspelling of "Al Karid". Rage

...although, I've decided to claim it's a tribute to DeviousMud rather than a mistake. Tongue

Lumbridge, detailed, parchment-style;
Spoiler:
Misthalin, detailed, (crude) terrain-style;
Spoiler:
World Map, simplistic, parchment-style;
Spoiler:

Names of new locations are completely random, aside from those with an author (such as "by Psychoboy8" on Agerdomus). So... if you want to bagsy one, go for it. The map uses hexakis gridding and a six-point compass to match. For those who cannot tell, this relates to the stone of Jas' hexakis gridding and I've made up the lore that the magic-matrix was woven into the planet when Guthix did his stuff (whether first time around or not, if you believe in the etch-a-sketch theory).

The sun rises in the Eotres, and sets to the Vesp. "Eotres" means "dawn", and "Vesp" is short for vesper, meaning "evening". North meaning "to the left of the rising sun", and South meaning "the region of the sun". Prior to astrological advancements and further understanding of the magical-matirx within our planet, it was recognised that Gielinor only had four points. A North and South, for magnetic purposes, with Vesp and Eotres making up the the perpendicular axis. However, it was noted that the moon does not orbit perpendicular to the planet and research was carried out. It was decided that the planet must have six cardinal directions as the moon follows an orbit at 60° to North, and sets at 240° to the South. Eotres was moved so that it still, although now more accurately, pointed to the point of the rising sun, and Vesp moved North to match. Lune was the name given for the point of moonrise, and Hath being mistranslated as the point of moonset. "The moon hath set too South" was the correct translation, however, multiple forms of verbs had been dropped from the English language some time in the past (such as thou, hath) and the word Hath wasn't translated, believing it to be a word to mean the moon; "The moon, Hath, set too South." Whilst the mistranslation was identified, the first "official" six-point compass had already been commissioned - thus, the name Hath was adopted.

Some older equipment still uses an "imperial", four-point compass. Fortunately, modern compasses are typically shown with 12 points (the additional points marking North-Vesp, North-Lune, and so on), meaning there still exists a four-point star within the image. Our trusty sextant uses four-cardinal points, North, Eotres, South and Vesp, thus few changes are required (in terms of game-programming*).

*creating a hexakis mapping system might be difficult, although, I don't fully understand how the sextant works anyway... so it might be easy.

hm, I just think if you were going to expand the desert it would also we a tad bit wist to expand morytania- especially Mort Myre Swamp or the Haunted Woods, possibly the Sanguniseti Area, OR just the entire place!

Morytania should also be more vast an evil. MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! RuneScape's HOT new look! - Page 18 Icon_twisted

Okay... bearing in mind that River Salve (or, to be geographically correct, the Salve Strait), where would you put Morytania's bigger size? Basically, the seven priestly warriors didn't just enchant a river, they created it by pushing the Morytania filth away from the mainland. Smile

I'm going to draw this in Flash, or have a dabble at it. Flash is a vector-based program, which means that if I change the size of something it shouldn't affect the quality or thickness of the lines. I'm going to make everything slightly bigger, again, purely because things like the land-bridge (although no longer a bridge) between Rellekka and Karamja should be large enough to support something... just looking at it's fine, but when you compare it to the size of Misthalin (the only detailed part of the map), it looks too thin. Whilst having water on both sides of you is fine if your heading out to a small peninsula, for another continent-sized bit of land the bridge should be larger.

Ardougne Split

With the death of king ulthas there was a short period of time in which the two brothers ruled together, but this couldn't last, and so after a series of arguments King Tyras moved his army, his people, his officials, and all his power across the lake to an age-old fortified city...

This city was christened West Ardougne, however Tyras soon left on his famed Tirawnn expedition, and in his absence king lathas, in an attempt to rule absolutely, faked a plague and quarantined the city.

So basically there is Ardougne, the capital...and West ardougne...the quarantined city that for a short time was co-capital

Gr33n... you wanted to help. In the gallery is a parchment version of the map, I'm going to be uploading a wordless version in a bit. Do you think you'd be any good at making it old fashioned? In fact, any one? Like... little sea serpents in the water, mountains/mountain-ranges, rivers, and such? Perhaps even a huge tree where the Grand Tree would be. I don't mind. Just... I can't. Plus, it'd be nice to see what you guys come up with. Smile

Very nice. But I'd still prefer if it was closer to the southern end of the lake so that the town can still be connected via a bridge. ...but I'm not limiting how far up the lake Ardougne and West Ardougne can go. Smile

Spoiler:
The Stone Desert, known formally as Mesokhardia, can be found North-Lune of the Khardian Desert. It would be the Mesoamerica of Gielinor, based mainly on the Maya and Aztec empires of old - including ziggurats and other marvellous cities/temples/structures. All... ruined, unfortunately. The Ruins of Ka'an, found on Karamja, match ruins found in the stone desert.

Transition between sand and stone;
Spoiler:

Spoiler:
An almost-replica of England's Stonehenge can be found South-Hath of Camelot Castle, in Albion. None know of it's significance, or what it's for. Many have, in the past, confused it with one of the Stone Circles erected for the worship of Guthix. The Knights of Camelot, however, know more to its tale. Fables told to the children of Albion speak of how King Arthur retrieved Excalibur from the stone altar at Stonehenge's centre, in a campaign with his knights, and they found themselves here.

See, I can make interesting lore that combines fiction with speculation. Tongue

There is no fade-in and fade-out for travel on RuneScape any more... unless that is what the travel specifically does (like the ectophial's very brief animation before it was removed because it lagged too much). Tongue

The whole ferry across seems stupid. There's be a bridge across the river either way, so why can't it be in the megacity rather than a half a minute down the road. Confuse

I'm going to add now that the images representing buildings will not necessarily match that which will actually be on the map.

Oh, and to those who might be concerns... Different lighthouse.
