I like the extract, by the way. A story of your own?

Um...well, I'm not even into college, and in America we don't settle on a "Major" until 1-2 years into college. Now, admittedly, I'm interested in math.

As to the story. Yes, it's my own. It focuses on the last scattered remnants of the once powerful Westhaver family as they -- and everyone else -- live through the end of an age.

Milos Westhaver and his disciples were central to the defeat of the dark armies that ravaged the world at the end of the last age, and afterwards, though he gave the crown to his friend Damien, he, and all the patriarchs of the Westhaver clan after him, were named first cousins of the throne.

Of course, we should go back a bit. After he beat back the armies from selthin, Milos and his disciples forged a huge spell locked into Damien's blood. They bound the spirits of the demons and men killed that day to fuel their spell, forging a massive web of magic centered round Damien. Any man willing could now swear a blood-oath to Damien -- their king -- and would be bound to his, and his family's authority. In return, they would gain access to battle magic sourced from the "Imperial Font." Almost instantly, the tides of war turned. Every man in the imperial army now had access to magic.

Soon after the victory at Selthin, Baston's family, the Ironfists, rose up against the dark armies. Well trained warriors, the harried the armies, soon becoming a severe threat, and major contributors to the victory.

Thus ended the previous age. Yet this age is foretold to end in chaos greater than any ever seen before. In this age, the world bends knee to the Emperor of Selthin, the bloodline of the Colossus. The Empire spans roughly a third of the continent, and only one other force in the world can match it's military might.

The Iron City, forged in the memory of Baston, is a city of mercernaries in the Western mountains. It's men wear armour and weapons of one of three materials: Iron for the grunts, Steel for the proven warriors, and Silversteel for the highest of the nobility. Men of high rank even wear clothing of fine steel rings "Steelcloth". The mages of rust, one of the three major groups that train men and women in corporal magic, serve the iron city.

The iron city will sell it's men for the right price to almost any cause that needs a sword: mercernaries, assassins, guards, security. It is trusted because it is better than anyone else, but everyone knows that if the city gets a higher bid on your life than you're paying to guard it, the guards will turn on you as fast as they can.

------------------------------------------

Anyway: The imperial system is forged of heavenly magic. Family of the emperor have rank determined by how far away from him they are. Noble marriages are officiated by mages who make sure the marriage acts as a link. The most powerful families in the realm are made sub-fonts of authority. The Lord Westhaver, for example, was, until the house fell, a First cousin by law of the emperor no matter how far he actually was from the emperor, and his family's rank mainly revolved around this. There are, at the current day, two remaining houses that hould first cousin titles, 7 second cousins, 35 third cousins...and it goes on.

Men sworn to the emperor also have authority befitting their rank, but their family do not recieve any benefit from it. Any man above you in the chain of command may give commands that you will be compelled by magic to follow.

I'll talk a bit bout magic later if anyone cares.

Oh, so you don't choose a particular subject to specialise in until later?
You're lucky to have a fondness for math, you know. Too many find it tiresome, myself included, and yet it's a valuable thing to study.
I'm on a psychology course at the moment. Just started recently.

Post by Dark Avorian Mon Nov 21, 2011 7:02 am

Another day ends in the small village. The old man, who worked the whole day on a poor farmer's land, sits on his usual seat. He plays the last few notes of a cheery song on his flute, the shrill notes piercing the calm night air. The same few children sit round him, eyes focused with rapt attention. As the last echoes of the flute die, a young boy speaks in a voice almost as shrill as the flute, "May we hear another story please?"

"Yes child, for you all must know how the world came to this place. I shall tell you the saddest tale of the last age: the tale of the War of the Young, when magic faded, blood ran like rivers through the lands, and the mighty force of justice was shattered by the whims of youth."

---------------------------------------------------------

Nearly three hundred years after the foundation of the Empire, an emperor died young. He had been a sickly man, and so it came as little surprise to anyone. The heir was his son, a lad of only thirteen, Prince Petras the Cruel. As was traditional in such cases, the Grand Chancellor, one Lord Varan Westhaver, made the necessary arrangements to assume the Regency until the Emperor came of age. Unfortunately, Petras had always been power hungry, and had no intentions of letting Varan delay his ascension.

Urged on by Chancellor Beldas of Southport, Petras penned an order to the Captain of the Guards. As the council met to declare Varan regent, the guards broke down the doors, bound by Imperial decree, and executed Varan on the spot.

Two days later, a rider arrived at the gates of Westhaven bearing a sealed decree from the Emperor. Upon opening it, General Temerus of WestHaven, bound by the blood-magic of Imperial Authority, ordered his men to seize the Lord Westhaver as a traitor and to slaughter his entire family...

Also, University of Chicago has, as of now, three well-edited essays from me, two letters of recommendation from my favourite teachers, five images of my finest artwork, another letter from my internship supervisor who is an alumni of the school, various materials describing my school, my performance at the school, my test scores, and my extracurriculars, and the abstract of a presentation me and three peers gave at an international scientific conference last year...I hope they like me.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEH! Grin

Over the past week I have acquired 1600+ pages of advanced Mathematics reading. I ordered Michael Spivak's book with the wonderfully understated title "Calculus" which basically proves all of calculus rigorously, and then my parents bought me "The Princeton Companion to Mathematics" which is a brilliantly written reference book to a huge sweep of modern mathematics.

Argh! I just so frustrated. I want, no, HAVE to get into University. I can do the work, cope with the complex information and have tried proving myself over and over and over again, but...

The exam board really hates me. Within the classroom or a lecture hall, I am nothing short of extra-ordinary. But what are they looking for? They're after my exam results. One days performance hardly reflects my ability, I can do the work, but someone marks me down on my exam papers.

Seriously, a D in Chemistry? I was the best in the group! I took mock papers all the time with really challenging stuff and got As and Bs, so how is it that something that was piss easy is given an E? The only way I can make it onto the course is to lie and state the grades I DESERVE! And checking over my results, there are three exams missing!

I want to do Forensic Sciences, but I am 20 points short, and that includes General Studies (that in itself makes no sense either, how can you score so low on these exams, the questions were easy and I knew everything I had to know?).

I am fed up with being treated with little to no respect. I haven't got a job, so the automatically classes me as filth, despite the fact I am trying my hardest. And everytime some on goes on about how much they're doing at university, the good time they're having and all that, I feel physically sick. I AM JUST SO f*cking LONELY! Crying or Very sad

Hi, you guys! Some of you may remember me as that one guy named Sozeru who made it to Asurahood and like Level 22 or something! The lovely Auuralei directed me to this forum when I asked if there's a place for the guild to hang out together, so I finally thought "Why not?" And here we are now!

WAs just digging through my room: found this poem I put together from lines of other poems for an assignment in eighth grade

The darkest evening of the year
Where love is a scream of anguish
Wherein the macabrous dance
Of men expecting yet another sun
In one thing deprived and in another made
Rage, rage against the dying of the light
Fate finds them receiving
Before the herd of jealous gods
They who feel death as close as breath
Grave men, near death who see with blinding sight
and stand behind their slaughter
A thousand powdered moles
The deeper into tyranny, the more they stole
a while from malice and from murdering
But first to hate
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay
the rare original heartsblood goes
Between the woods and frozen lake
And changeless lands of frozen ice
Towards misted and ebulllient seas
And cooling shores, towards lost Amphibias emperies
With Death and Morning on silver horns
So strangeness gently steels
Like frozen lakes whose ice is thin
The little dog lay curled and did not rise
First it got deformed then got another form
Until in time the posture grew extreme
The insistent elbow locked and freakish looking
Of blinded eyes and rolls
Spent on the earthen hide, in the folds and wizenings, flows
Now the winter downs the dying of the year.

Its a cento, so every line is a line from another poem. There are ten poems represented here, but holy shit was I a twisted kid.

Now I like you even more. I wrote stunningly bloody fiction in 8th grade... Including a fun poem about murder. The cento used here was astoundingly well done though. Great job.

So, I'm done high school. We finished classes three weeks ago, and I'm now having an absolute blast shadowing the Hopkins pediatric OR's for six weeks. Just got final reports, straight As. (So...apparently my best year ever for my GPA was senior year #wut). Got a date for the prom, plans for an awesome senior week, and a fun summer.

Anyway. I've decided to "make official" the way I've been acting for the past few years/months/whatevers. I'm retiring from this website. I'll drop in and take a peak every now and then. But I'm done. It's been a long, fun, strange trip with y'all. Good luck suggesting, and may the world take you all to where you need to be.
