Dear Blog,
Hold off that retirement a bit. Maybe will visit with even less frequency. But I'm still going on.

Re: Dark Avorian! A Strange Mind!
So I've got a really tight awesome friend group already established at college through our facebook page, another facebook group we made, and Google hangouts. I've been openly bi since the beginning with this group, and I just met a guy living near where I do to hangout...and well the hanging out escalated. I think I'm finally in something of a relationship.

Re: Dark Avorian! A Strange Mind!
Excerpts from a moment in my current mental fantasy story.
-----
In a decrepit manor house on the southern border of the Greater Havenlands, they gathered. Adventurers, merchants, paupers, the last grimy remnants of a once glorious bloodline. Once they had glided on the mists high above the lowlands. Now they were a broken and scattered diaspora, eking out an existence on the fringes of the Kingdoms of Steam. Valon Westhaver watched as the family gathered in the courtyard of the forgotten building in the middle of a thick woodlands.
From the woods a figure in a large hooded cloak emerged, striding purposefully to the rusted gate of the manor. Soft gasps escaped the lips of some of the less careful Westhavers. Valon barely restrained his own. Had the hunters finally found them? And of all times, when they were all gathered in one place. The guards lowered spears, fear in their eyes. The figure stopped short of the gate. It raised gloved hands to it's hood and lowered it.
"I am Lena Westhaver, heir of Voltarin. I have braved the mistlands. I have seen the sorrow, spoken with the dying gods. Even you of weakened blood see the truth in my eyes." As one, they kneeled, they could see it.
Above the wooded vale, on the crest of a rocky ridge, Herdin watched the Westhavers mill about in his spyglass. His men were on their bellies, rifles loaded and aimed. A great creaking behind him signalled the arrival of a cannon on the ridge. Through the woods dark shapes moved. He had his command. If things did not go well below, his men were to fire until every last Westhaver lay dead on the ground. They had followed Lena here.
The Lord Keeper of Dakar prison was awoken by a harsh rapping at his door. Bleary-eyed, he lifted his head from the sheaf of reports he had just used as a makeshift pillow. "Enter" he mumbled, smoothing his coat. An aide eased the door open, peeking in, and then was pulled away as a large man wearing the robes of an Authority magistrate entered the room. "Lord Keeper? I bear a writ of the Authority, the following prisoners are to be brought to me in the chamber of Justice, all officers present in the prison will also attend."

A game I'd kill to play
Imagine an arcanists style massively deformable map in 2 or 3 dimensions. Add simple fluid physics and multiple materials like in the classic falling sand games. You are a mage with some health, some ability to move, and some amounts of mana, possibly split into multiple categories. The conceit of the game? You design the spells. At the start of designing a spell you start from a few basic categories. Then you hit specifics and have a number of quantities you can scale.
Example:
Category: Aimed - Single Projectile - Detonate on Impact
Main Impact Point Properties:
Blast shape: Circular, centered on impact
Impulse distribution: Even
Impulse: 30pixels/s in radial direction
Damage distribution: Even
Damage: 60
Conditionals: None.
Available immediately however is a simple semi-coding interface that allows you design spells much more sophisticated than this.
For example, a bolt that fires 10 small projectiles in a spray of x degrees, each of which bounce three times, unless it hits water. After this it detonates. If it hits a person, or water, in its blast radius, 2 projectiles are fired from this, using the exact same projectile profile.
Now, a caveat of this is that each category would be carefully linked to a mana cost. So that spell above would be almost useless to a beginner because their mana wouldn't sustain even the second wave of projectiles. On the other hand, an experienced high mana mage could potentially overwhelm an entire party of people with these tiny projectiles, at the risk of draining his own mana to nothing.

Re: Dark Avorian! A Strange Mind!
Neat exert and game idea. If I was more competent I'd give it a go at making the 3D Arcanists, but I haven't got any idea how I'd make the terrain xD
Re: Dark Avorian! A Strange Mind!
Aside from Mana costs though, how would you balance the spells?

Re: Dark Avorian! A Strange Mind!
Mana is literally the only way to balance them. Every factor would be linked to mana costs. Wanna increase the impulse force? Mana-up. Wanna increase damage? Mana-up. Wanna increase blast radius? Mana-up. It would literally have to be something where the developers would be tweaking factors constantly to maintain balance.

Re: Dark Avorian! A Strange Mind!
In Magicka, you can mix and match 8 "elements" to fashion different spells.
-Arcane = beams
-Electricity = AOE
-Earth = bombs
And so on.
Spells can "stored" so to speak, you have to mix-and-match every time. The more elements you combine (and the longer you charge the spell) the slower the character moves - almost to the point of not moving at all.
Spells come in three stages of charge - instant, lite and heavy. The more elements, the longer it takes to get to heavy (i.e. the longer you're insanely slowed).
The balance in Magicka is how vulnerable you are while create amazing spells.
But mana would balance Dark Avorian's mechanic - assuming that mana regenerates fairly quickly.

Re: Dark Avorian! A Strange Mind!
I guess the only thing would be that a low impulse spell can be just as desirable as a high impulse one. Similarly, in many categories there's a tradeoff. Impulse can disrupt a person's strategies/drown them/move them to a bad place, but low impulse leaves them vulnerable to secondary projectiles.

Re: Dark Avorian! A Strange Mind!
Its a strange feeling to play the game as I once was addicted to it. The most striking thing: we're not rich anymore. All these players, wandering, we don't have the millions, the vast economy pulsing from the heart in Varrock, pushing every necessary item through the veins of Runescape. It will be a while, if ever, before 007scape has that again. We've forgotten what it's like to beg for the odds and ends no one has, to steal cakes for an inventory of food. We'd forgotten how to run from terrible monsters, to fear death.
