Mythics: Durial
This infamous-or famous villain of our story. Feel free to discuss anything about him.

Re: Mythics: Durial
Of course, but it seems that we're having to rewrite his character, so I made this thread.

Re: Mythics: Durial
Oh, I thought you made this thread so information on his character would be easily accessible.
Ummm... I'll pull up what we had.

Re: Mythics: Durial
Yeah, Jeeves and EVERYONE in the previous discussion thread was starting to re-evaluate his role in the quest, so therefore I made this thread for discussion about his role in the quest.
Also, you can include general information established.

Re: Mythics: Durial
I suggested we change his name to Adam so players wouldn't confuse the name.

Nah, Adam is typically a positive person, and players (who tend to be more religious) would probably find that a little offensive. I think Durial is ominous enough.

Re: Mythics: Durial
Do we change his name? It's currently homage to Durial321 of the Falador Massacre.
All visitors to the guild are legends in their own rite, thus, Durial is no exception. However, it's not entirely necessary to include what his trials and achievements were.
His is from the time immediately before the 1st Age, at the close of a great war that has left his world ruined and burning. Well, that's debatable, but either way Guthix decreed that the world would be rebuilt.
Whether he learns of Guthix in his own time, or within the guild, he uses the Guild to delay the pending demise of his home. One must remember that Durial isn't intentionally playing the villain, he is sincerely trying to save his home.
Durial bides his time in the guild, waiting for someone capable and gullible enough to help him stop Guthix - although he has no idea how he'd go about slaying a god. So, he requests the weapon of a god, something to make them killable/mortal, and something to protect him from their insatiable power.

Does he actually know, what the items are? Or do we go to Reldo who has a book on the subject?

Whilst I personally don't care if religious persons find it offensive, as that's just pathetic, Durial is not an evil character. Adam and Eve are the first people, well, in fiction... Durial is from a time before our beginning, thus Adam isn't actually a poor choice.
1) We don't need to change his name.
2) We have scores of names to choose from.

somehow he knows, but unfortunately doesn't have the resources?

Originally, no. The quests original angle was that the player would receive little aid from the main NPC (Durial), and they would have to use their knowledge of the game in order to complete the tasks. This also avoided the question, "Why isn't Durial doing it himself?" and "How come all these locations we visit are just now appearing..." by having existing NPCs claim they were always there we just never looked.
We ask Durial, "What weapon did you have in mind?".
Durial: "Perhaps the blade of the mighty Eleyon?" (a god in his time)
Callum: "Who?"
Durial: "I'll pretend you didn't say that..."
Callum: "O-kay..."
Thus, we ask characters who know their history (Reldo), and for the potion we ask potionmasters, etc.
I don't think we used this indefinitely, it faded into the abyss of discussion. But at the same time we didn't replace it. Thus, in response to your question, there currently is no decided answer.

this would be before Jagex and the wilderness.

hm.... Perhaps he knew via the guild's resources, or maybe these were objects fabled in his time, and is testing for their reality now.

I think Dark meant, and pardon if I'm wrong, trivial references. Anyway, if an NPC said "Jagex removed the wilderness" it'd be the Jagex part that would be more shocking (rather than the fact that the events in the quest predate the wilderness removal in a chronological sense).

I personally would never get that reference, even if you told me to keep an eye out for it before I read it.
Re: Mythics: Durial
Well of course you wouldn't if it was made that way...but there are ways to do it.

Re: Mythics: Durial
I like the original idea of Durial we had. No fancy frills or nothin'. Just a guy who wants to save his home and is willing to do whatever it take to make it happen.

Re: Mythics: Durial
Yes, I honestly think we're trying to over complicate this!
He was a hero of his own time, and now going to rescue it, but completely misguided!
I think we should now talk about his three objects and how he is knowledgeable of them.

Re: Mythics: Durial
The ones he asks us to get? I imagine that after sitting for thousands of years at the gateway, he's picked up knowledge of different things that might be common throughout all worlds and times. Legends that might speak of things to come? Say he talks to an adventurer who heard of a legend that in...500 years, all the gods will die. 500 years later, he'll talk to an adventurer from that time period and ask if it's true.

Re: Mythics: Durial
Or maybe he just asks us for something to mortalize, protect from and damage an invincible being and we can go from there?

I prefer this one.
Also, Durial is thousands of years old... but he doesn't have to have been waiting there for thousands of yearsnly been there for thousands of years with respect to us. I reckon he hasn't actually been in there that long from his respect.
