Re: Re: The True Nightmare
The Nightmare is far more powerful than Lucien, it can do as it wishes to those that get in its way.
The signature heroes' purposes are somewhat served now. I checked to make sure I wasn't killing someone who had further potential.

Re: Re: The True Nightmare
The signature heroes have hardly even started to fulfill their purpose... Each is meant to feature in several quests across many different story lines in the future, and so far, Xenia has been in one.
Bob the Cat, too, has further potential, given that a Tail of Two Cats is a requirement for ROTM.
May I ask, how exactly did you do this check for potential?

Re: Re: The True Nightmare
Despite the Nightmare being a powerful threat, it is unwise in provoking the Arzonusii at this stage. It is rumoured that when Giovanni Magnus was born, he was kidnapped and was missing for a fortnight. During that time, his great grandfather, Theta Magnus threatened to rip the world apart until he found his descendant.

Re: Re: The True Nightmare
It's a cutscene, in which all the leaders gather together and Elder Silver explains what the Nightmare will do. At one stage, she asks if anyone recognises a particular symbol that she presents on the table; the symbol of the Shadow Apprentices. All those gathered recognise it, they have seen it on personal armaments, on archaic documents, painted onto walls and displayed genuinely everywhere. The threat finally hits home and everyone is now worried as the Shadow Apprentices are in numbers of at least 20,000 and growing.

The encounter with Theta
Theta Magnus: "You're going about this a little slowly if you ask me and in very much the wrong direction."
Player: "Step away! Don't make me use force!"
Theta Magnus: "If that is meant to be intimidation, I have seen far more impressive displays from younglings chasing their own tails."
Player: "Back away, I will fight!"
Theta Magnus: "What gives you the impression that I want to fight you? I have need of you, to be honest."
Player: "I will never help you! Not after what you've done!"
Theta Magnus: "Explain..."
Player: "You released the Lonely Ones on Morytania! They are trying to destroy everything we are trying to work for."
Theta Magnus: "Under orders from a higher authority. The Lonely Ones needs to be disposed of, and that backwater domain seemed somewhat suitable. In order to accomplish the demands of Arzonus and the Myreque, you are dealing with an unreasonable enemy. Drakan expresses his interests veyr brutally, so he will only answer to extortion."
if the player has completed Mark of Magnus
Player: "And those prisoners, you didn't spare any of them."
Theta Magnus: "All of them were marked for death, all had used their abilities for their own gain and conspired against the city. Those that were killed were beyond redemption; an inside job planned the breakout; however one of them tipped me off and I came to stop them, but one slowed me down.
And I apologise for fighting you, it was all part of a greater plan to infiltrate the terror sect of the Draconis Force.
To be honest, they were nothing more than a bunch of elderly men who planned evil plans in their parent's basements till I came along. They aren't that dangerous from what I've learned.
Player: "I'm not fully convinced."
Theta Magnus: "I require not your trust, just some of your commitment to help an elderly wolf in need of assistance."
Player: "Just what is it you want?"
Theta Magnus: "My great grandson, Giovanni Magnus, will inevitably return. I want to know where he is. And you can help me."
Player: "You want me to find Giovanni?"
Theta Magnus: "Not entirely. He carried with him the Core of Fear, a powerful talisman that was the key to his power. I plan to track the Core of Fear using a sister core; the Core of Deception.
"A Shadow Apprentice currently seeks it for her own purposes. I would like you to retrieve it from her and hand it over to me."
Player: "And what do you offer to me in return?"
Theta Magnus empowers you with impressive strength and combat knowledge
Theta Magnus: "Find me what I need and I'll give you my support and my strength. The sensation you currently have will be permanently induced. Anything else that you need to find and acquire the core will be supplied.
It counts for nought in comparison to the sentimental value of the task you perform. Giovanni is the only family I currently have left."
Player: "You said it was in the hands of a Shadow Apprentice."
Theta Magnus: "Deal with her as you wish. You're perfectly welcome to kill her to get what you want, I can tell you want to do that anyway."

Re: Re: The True Nightmare
During the quest, "The Nightmare Begins", the player has to amass an army to take the Torn Realm. The Nightmare is feeding on negativity between peoples so the best defence is an army that probably would never normally be without tensions.
Tiffy seemed open minded when Ali revealed himself to be Wahisietel in the Ritual of the Mahjarrat, so he seems not that bothered by something so trivial as races provided their goals are the same. If he can do it, then probably a lot of others can.
Just as it looks as if the kingdoms can't spare anyone, you enter the Torn Realm and proceed to fight Paige Shadowplay and it look almost as if all is lost against the Shadow Apprentice barrage (which will look similar to how the Ritual of the Mahjarrat battle looks). However, Theta Magnus is a wolf of his word and people, a lot of them too, owe him favours. He brings even the most unlikely of warriors, including Azzanadra and Akthanakos, who set their individual needs aside to fight this fearsome enemy.

The Nightmare Begins Teaser Trailer
Through a bed of fog, the title, "RuneScape", appears. It crumbles and breaks and falls to dust.
Cuts to image of the Torn Mountains, the Nightmare's resurrection.
"The greatest evil has been reborn."
Scenes from Truth and Law of a building being destroyed; Melissa Majoria being crushed by ice in Heart of Ice.
"And many have died already."
People look at a stormy sky and retreat into their homes in fear.
"But how many more will be lost to the darkness?"
The Shadow Apprentices gather in the Torn Realm to watch the Nightmare casting an incantation.
"RuneScape now faces its darkest hour..."
Arzonus under invasion.
"And the Nightmare will show no mercy..."
The ravaged dream plane.
"No compassion..."
The spirit familiars are slain by great beasts.
"And no weakness!"
The battle in the Torn Realm between the Shadow Apprentices and the army fighting for RuneScape.
"Who will stand victorious in the ultimate battle for RuneScape?"
Cuts to darkness and then to the Nightmare's silhouette in front of the blood red moon.
Nightmare - Now, at the end, shall you behold the majesty of the eternal darkness!

At least I think it wasn't a premonition, usually I can tell...

Re: Re: The True Nightmare
Question...
Is Nomad involved in this in any way?
I noticed Nomad's Requiem isn't a requirement, but Nomad actually has a back story that could easily fit in to The Nightmare Begins
Think about it...
We know Nomad has a mysterious and powerful master. Someone thought to have control over the Black Knights (since Elite Dark Mages are seen attacking him at the beginning of the quest) and Nomad was using soul energy to gain power to fight him.
Everyone thought this master was Lucien, but when ROTM came and Lucien died without Nomad's Requiem as a requirement, this was proved wrong.
Could the master, therefore, be the Nightmare? Could Nomad be an ex-shadow apprentice?

Re: Re: The True Nightmare
Presumably so, but with Nomad's Requiem being a requirement, I'd have to make the Living Nightmare even stronger. Nomad might not be a Shadow Apprentice, or a former one at that. You don't simply stop being a Shadow Apprentice, you have to be banished freely or suitably destroyed.
Nomad does not have the makings of a Shadow Apprentice. Whilst the throne would be something the Nightmare would possibly "suggest" to him, when he tests it, he has all the hallmarks of someone who sought it out for their own gain in mind, rather than helping the Nightmare. Shadow Apprentices will only ever do something to help the Nightmare, such is their sickening loyalty. They would give up their own physical needs to help it (Bilrach would be evidence of this).
There might be a little extra portion fitted within it if the player has completed it. Just awards a little extra experience to compensate for the lack of it as a reward in NR.
I could put it as a requirement to reach a certain stage, but not complete it.

Re: Re: The True Nightmare
It would be worth stating that the Nightmare would be the first possible example in RuneScape of an actual devil.
Gods in RuneScape acquire their power through faith, the Nightmare becomes stronger through fear, an opposing force. Faith brings out loyalty, hope and strength; fear evokes deceit, despair and weakness.
