RWTscape
First topic message reminder :
To be honest, I'm surprised there isn't a thread about this already, so I made one.
Today, April 2nd 2012, JaGex introduced a system which allows you to purchase spins on the Squeal of Fortune for real life money.
So I'm interested in your opinions on this. The forums are, unsurprisingly, full of rants and flame, and I want some smarter discussion.
Is it real world trading? Is it illegal gambling? If so, what's caused JaGex to break their own rules and do this? Is this the end for RuneScape?

I predicted them releasing Runespan today. Jagex made a hude a huge, douchbag move. Next time there will be a blackout...have it on a different site rather than on the forums. So they won't know and/or won't be able to prepare.

Re: RWTscape
I honestly think that Jagex keeps doing these because the overwhelming expression of disagreement is OMG JIGGLYFLEX IS RETARDED. QUIT RS. LOLOLOL.
They do actually recant decisions. The Forum Change last April or so was modified because the people affected rationally explained why it was a bad move and the 'flamers' didn't. I honestly think we're doing this to ourselves.

Re: RWTscape
Over this weekend, Jagex are going to make it easier to win tattoos and horns from Squeal of Fortune, though how they do this is anyone's guess.
Either they make it so that the prizes are either ALWAYS the red prize (which doesn't make it any easier, it just adds it to the infintessimal statistics) or downgrade them temporarily to a yellow prize so chances are you might still not get one.
Not sure what this means.

Yes. It's Mad May, it is promoting members in a big way. That includes the goods.

Re: RWTscape
Don’t miss out on the first of our four Wild Weekends in May! For
this weekend only (Saturday, Sunday and Monday), we’ve increased your
chances to win big and bag yourself some of the horns and tattoos from
the Squeal of Fortune!
This weekend (Saturday the 5th, Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th in
their entirety, GMT) a selection of horns and tattoos will be added to
the Uncommon and Common slots on the Squeal of Fortune. This massively
increases the chances of winning those items, so don’t miss out: spin
this weekend and see if you can claim prestigious and fantastic-looking
prizes!
Don’t forget that, as a member, you’ll get 3 spins per day instead of
2 on every day you log in during May as part of the Mad May offer, so
you’ll have even more chances to win big! Subscribe now so you can get your extra spins!

Re: RWTscape
the reality is 90% of our members are enjoying the Squeal of Fortune on a daily basis and over 70% of our free players utilise the Squeal of Fortune daily too
That is a clever use of words. By "enjoying" he merely means making use of, as there is obviously no evidence of enjoyment. I use it because it's there, not because I necessarily enjoy it. The entire article completely avoids the actual concerns, also.
I don't think anyone has an issue with the Squeal of Fortune itself, merely the microtransactions.
Pretending I'm neutral, payment security is obviously important and so I'm glad that was implemented.
On a side note, I have two tattoos already both with free tickets from Runespan. Oh, and I'm 80 runecrafting.

CAN SOMEONE ANSWER MEI F THE TATTOOS ARE FREE OR NOT ALONG WITH THE HORNS? Please, I have already asked nicely and no-one answered me

Re: RWTscape
I didn't even see you ask that the first time. Looking up. Morbius already answered didn't he? According to the RS Wikia, the Mystic Tattoo is members only. I can't be bothered to check all of them, but I'd assume they're all members only.
Re: RWTscape
I'm still unsure whether I should laugh, cry or rage at Jagex's fail logic.
"90% of people use our free service. Therefore, everyone LOVES the paying service."
That's like saying:
"99% of people in Britain use the free NHS. Therefore, Brits enjoy being hospitalised"
Or
"99% of people in Britain use the free NHS. Therefore, everyone in Britain approves of paying for healthcare"

Re: RWTscape
I find it has been heavily made up, but they did hold a poll once and a lot of people did vote that they were pleased with it. This didn't mention people paying for spins, but some people liked the possibility of winning something and, in some cases, did win something like rune weaponry which could be sold quite nicely or kept by low levels that couldn't afford the higher price weapon.

Re: RWTscape
This is a poll that the RS Wiki ran on the matter.
What is your opinion of the Squeal of Fortune buyable spins?
I love it! Wealthy people should be able to buy success. 3.3% (89 votes)
I hate it! It's no better than real-world trading. 69.7% (1909 votes)
I don't like it, but Jagex is allowed to make money. 17.7% (485 votes)
It doesn't really matter. 8.2% (225 votes)
Unbiased, large enough to be statically significant, and much more relevant to the matter than Jagex's stats.

Re: RWTscape
Right, because people who look at the wiki in enough detail to find the poll/would bother to answer it are certainly a representative slice of RS. Further, no poll with that wording can be called unbiased.

Re: RWTscape
It's on the front page of the wiki. You hardly have to look in detail.
Besides, what's biased about the wording? It's not like they said "You dislike buyable spins, don't you?"
Even if you are right, it's much better than the stats Jagex are quoting. Do you like buyable spins or are you just finding flaws in my argument?
If you like, I'll reword it to "less biased".

Re: RWTscape
Personally, I've seen the front page of the wiki maybe ten times total. But then again, I guess not everyone is setting shortcuts into their Chrome search bar. Still, I read the stuff on that page far less than I visited it. And no, I don't like buyable spins...but when you word options like that in a poll, I lose all respect for you. That kind of intellectual dishonesty honestly pisses me off far more than a company doing what they want in their game.

Re: RWTscape
Hey, don't blame me, I didn't make the poll.
And I still maintain, even if you think it is biased, intellectually dishonest or whatever, that it's not worse than the statistical manipulation Jagex are doing to try and convince us buyable spins are ok.

Re: RWTscape
They're not pressuring you to buy them. As far as we know, spins might be purchasable on the outside, but you could go to the interface and it would say;
"You're a gullible fool thinking you can buy success! Buying spins is a ridiculous idea.
Don't tell anyone this or we will tell everyone you have a crush on JB."
So, people do go there, get turned away and never speak of it again. Do you honestly think that people have far less common sense than you give them credit for?

Re: RWTscape
No.
Basically, you're calling Jagex money grabbing and trying to prey on players, but it's not like that at all and trying to trick players into buying spins.
I don't see Squeal of Fortune as RWT, as there is no immediate gain like you would get by genuinely buying money or expensive equipment. None of the stuff is tradable, the in game advantage is limited, so how is it in anyway like RWT?
It's Jagex's game and they should be allowed to make money from it. If they are having to appeal in this way, they are in some state of financial trouble and we should be less scrutinous thinking of them as money grabbing and greedy when they have staff to pay, players to please and have managed to produce a really fine game for more than 10 years.

Re: RWTscape
"the in game advantage is limited"
While you're entitled to your own opinion, in mine, this is where your argument fails.
The items gained really aren't the problem. It's the XP. Large amounts of cheap XP, to be precise. That is an ingame advantage, and I wouldn't describe it as "limited". You can buy up to 20k XP per pound - I calculated it. You can trade your real world money for XP ingame.
You're quite right, Jagex can chose how they run their game. But they do not choose whether we enjoy their decisions, and they do not choose whether we feel negatively impacted by them, or whether we pay them for a continued service.
Thus, this point does not invalidate my opinions, it just means they won't be listened to.
I'm sorry, Morb, I really can't agree with you on this one.
